  • my mum used to be incapacity benefit victory - heart attack, diabetes and angina. In the last govt crackdown they stopped hers. She could probably have fought it but didn't. Oddly enough, she's miles better now - she'd kind of got it in her head that incapacity benefit meant incapable of pretty much anything. Since coming off it she's been out and about a lot more and is much more active and happier. Not saying thats the case for everyone, but whe nwe give ourselves labels we can be dragged down by them.

thats really interesting to hear sary, i love how enthusaiastic you are and it's clearly working for you. The price of bread is pretty high these days, but it's not without reason - I've had to do a fair bit of research on this for work and the complications going on behind the scenes are unbelievable, and not going to go away i'm afraid.

mmm, enjoying my veggie burgers. I'm currently hooked on burgamix, trouble is, each sachet makes enough for 4 big burgers and it doesn't chill. very tempting to eat all 4 . . . .

    nmm what is superbody?

Well done a bleep test today, and still can't reach my target level but at least I'm not longer dying in the "warm up" levels and only 60m away from my target. And then did a fitness test in circuit training tonight various sit ups, press ups and weights as many as possible in 1min 20secs. Wasn't overly pleased with my result but it will be something to aim to improve on and it was miles better than I could've managed last year.

AND last night I got a compliment on my weight loss from a guy I used to work with. Very funny him trying to imply I was quite big before without causing offense, especially as he is normally quite blunt!

  • Evening all I have just about managed to read everything I missd when I was away.

Victory I would recommend a trip to your local specsavers as they do specs from £25 I know it is a pain to wear specs but it is great to see clearer :rotfl:

I am still in tonnes of pain so not been able to do much cardio but felt so bad just watchin tv so did 30 mins free step on the Wii. I never thought I would see the day I did that !! So going to take it easy so I heal quickly and can get back to my 6.30am exercise again.

I know I am a day late but well done Raph on your decision listening to you gives me hope. I don't think I have ever fitted into a pair of size 10 anything let alone jeans :T

Also as everyone on here seems to give such great advice what is the best BPM to burn fat so I can get a better work out??

Buttons - my breadmaker is the newer Panasonic one. I got it in a sale on Amazon for about £70, and it's paid for itself over and over since. I've never yet made a dud loaf (altho I did once try to bake one without adding water - baked flour looks a bit odd)! I use pretty much whatever flour is the cheapest, so it was Sainsburys, or Lidl's then Tesco, but Tesco and Sainsbury's recently put their packets up to 71p & 79p from 50p and 48p!! My Lidl is quite far away, so the petrol cost makes it less cost effective to go there, but I have a mate who's going to see what the large bags from Costco cost, to compare for me. Hovis flour is too expensive for me, especially considering how much bread we tend to get through here. I buy the large packets of yeast from the Co-Op for £1.30, which is cheaper than the sachets other supermarkets tend to sell.

My children don't like shop bought bread anymore, unless it's the fancy French bread that costs an arm and a leg. h/m bread tastes like bread used to be like when I was a kid. It doesn't last more than a couple of days, because it's not full of preservatives, but frankly there's little chance of it lasting here anyway. H/m breadrolls are simply delish too. If bread is your thing, then I don't think you can go wrong with a breadmaker. Mine has an automatic dispenser for fruit, nuts, etc., so I can bake a lovely fruit & spice loaf. Yummy! I feel hungry now, and I'm avoiding bread too! Darn it!

No Wii today - I just can't get a look in with the kids about. I may consider putting locks on their doors overnight to keep them out of the way tomorrow morning!

OK, here's what I've gorged on today:
    B - porridge
L - fat free natural yoghurt, 7 strawberries, 1 medium banana
Snack - 1 Nairns fruit & spice oat biscuit
D - 1 quorn sausage, 2 h/m yorkshires (I cut the sausage in half & bake it in the yorkies), mixed veg

I remembered to count in my milk allowance today too, which is a hidden 100 calories in itself. I really want to push for a 2lb loss next week if possible, which will break me through my first stone barrier. Fingers crossed anyway.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home

Hi everyone. Well a good and bad day for me today! I got another assignment back with another 1st! I got a 71% so only just got the top grade but i got it none the less! The bad part was I was so happy that then a few things happened to "knock" me that i then got quite down. My fave restaurant (thai) is currently under refurbishment so we couldnt go out to celebrate so we ended up having an indian take away tonight. I guess the good bit was that I would normally scoff it all but saved half for lunch tomorrow. Yes I will consume the same (horrendous) amount of calories but at least its not all in one gut busting meal! Had a very light day with only two crumpets throughout the rest of the day and will have a cereal and light evening meal day tomorrow to balance it out.

I have also got no uni work done for the last couple of days and due to the massive house stuff we are doing this weekend i wont get a lot done then either. God knows how Im going to catch that up but will eventually do so somehow. On the upside...should be lots of calorie burning exercise moving/dragging stuff around etc. Hope everyone had a better food day than me!

Oh and raph...congrats for becoming a maintainer!

AIWITS I have believe its 65% of your maximum BPM. Your maximum is based on your age (and in some calculations your sex). Although I just use the list thats up in the gym which is age but not sex based. I think Missy knows the actual calculation figures, and is probably much more up to date with the info, or if you PM me your age I can have a look at the table in the gym tomorrow. For info I'm 27 and I think 65% is around 125-7

I went to the gym today and held on to the metal handle bars on the cycle to see what my heart rate was - when I was working hard it was 110 and just gentle cycling it was 70-80. At the time I didn't know what those numbers meant so just looked them up.

I found these two sites - which ties up with what you are saying:

First work out your max heart rate - the age-based method (the simplest one to use) is 226 minus age for women, 220 minus age for men.

Then you can work out your HR zones:

    1. Light exercise - maintain healthy heart / get fit = 50-60%
    2. Weight management - lose weight / burn fat = 60-70%
    3. Aerobic base building - increase stamina / aerobic endurance = 70-80%
    4. Optimal conditioning - maintain excellent fitness condition = 80-90%
    5. Elite athlete - maintain superb athletic condition = 90-100%

'Zone 2' is not the only method for shedding fat. Higher intensities will burn more calories overall and also rev-up your metabolism after your workout. Intense resistance exercise (weights etc) also helps, again by giving your metabolism a boost and helping you maintain/add muscle (the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism).

I find pulse sensors at the gym underestimate by 10bpm+ compared to my heart rate monitor which measures the heartbeat directly via a chest strap. My home equipment pulse sensors are even more inaccurate :rotfl:

I could go into more detail but I hope that helps as a basic overview - if anyone's interested there is an exercise thread on MSE, where there will always be someone along who can answer these types of questions and try to help you get the best from your workouts :)
