My friend Ian - who appreciates such things - got a painting and a Christmas themed candle made from crayons, the top half red and the bottom forest green.

You use the cream plastic ones. You can drill a hole in for the cord, or stick a barrel shaped bead on top with something really strong like super glue. You can then stick an image to it, or colour with alcohol inks, or stamp an image on - whatever grabs you. My favourites so far have been ones that I've stamped (I have some nice fairy/girl stamps that are sort of in an art nouveau-y style) then coloured with decorating chalk and then sealed with PVA or glossy accents.

I'll need to see if I can take some pics of mine, but if you search for "altered dominoes" or "domino art" you should find some examples on the web.
