They actually have 4, one at each end or each of the 2 drive shafts. (assuming 2 wheel drive).

Could still be quite a few things from wheel bearings, suspension strut top mount, ball joints etc etc. Take it back in;)

    thanks for that. cheers

  • i have a 96 megane hatch and have same prob . exactly also its been in garage and had drive shafts done BOTH SIDED, to no affect- so they did not charge put old uns back in..... i ahd trackrod end done as the judderin must a lostened it, ive also done bearings..... it is still there though now i only get the judderin when i turn left, COULD IT BE FUEL ISSUES MAYBE, FUEL STARVATION, OR AIR SOMEWHERE IN FUEL LINE?????? ANYBODY....... IF I COAST ROUND left corner WITH NO ACCELERATION , WITH OR WITH OUT CLUTCH IN IT DOES NOT DO IT- ONLY WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE ROUND A LEFT CORNER?????? STRANGE - IT HAD THE GARAGE STUMPED...... ANY IDEAS............... seems similar to what u describe....though a guy at a bmw garage told me it could be fuel, filter, comp.... dunno---maybe he was going to lead me on a goose chase, charging each time .....anyway ive gotta live with it... when driving normally on main roads its fine, only when u pull up to a junction and then accelerate left it happens , then only if the corner is fairly sharp.....when u straighten it stops ..... cheerz guys other than that no issues, steers fine and everything

I seriously doubt that fuel starvation or changing of the fuel filter will stop it knocking!

Think you need to get it up on a ramp and looked at. Could be any number of things, cv joints/gaiters, ball joints, rack ends - who knows? You need someone to look at it and drive it. Can't diagnose over the internet.

    Check your engine mounts.
  • hi we have a megane 54 plate and have this noise also,we have been told it is the driveshaft and need a complete new one (o/s) it will cost £270.00 fitted my oh not happy.
  • Does the noise only happen on straights or corners?

it could be your inner cv joint, drop links, ball joint, track rod end, or worst your steering rack

have you checked to see that you aint got a snapped spring?
  • I have the same problem with my 2002 megane coupe. when accelerating off a roundabout or out of a corner i get a loud knocking/rattling sound from the driver side wheel area... once the wheel is straightened it goes away. my ABS has also been playing up, kicking in as soon as i touch the brakes and then when under hard braking yesterday a loud bang came from the wheel area and my abs warning light lit up... I was wondering if the two could be liked ???????????
  • I have had experience with this issue with my 1998 "S" Megane RTe 1.6.

The cause is actually a combination of things and it can get quite expensive to put right.

The CV joints are the starting point (all four as previously mentioned) then the other items that have been mentioned (but not the fuel system) and FINALLY and most expensively the gearbox!

Apparently its not uncommon for the final drive (diff) to let go on these. It starts with the planetary gear starting to "wobble" or "wiggle" as you drive. The issue also affects older Lagunas. Tell tale is a slight "feathering" and uneven wear of the front tyre treads.

The cause is often put down to "kerbing" damage but I'd also put it down to poor build quality/design. The CV boots are a constant problem I have to replace them virtually every year on my 98 model.

As I said, I've had experience of the issue - I ended up having to replace one drive shaft, an engine mount (the rear one tends to take the strain when the drive system is "wobbling") and the whole gearbox a few year's back. The CVs are starting to get noisy again after approx 60,000 more miles.

    Wishing I'd bought something else!

    CHECK THE WHEELNUTS

My parents had the same. The wheelnuts were loose on one wheel. Not enough to be able to notice it by trying to move it by hand with the weight on but loose they were.
