Renault Megane (knocking noise, front wheel area)
hi there.
i have a Renault Megane (W reg) it has around 60 thou on the clock.
A while ago i noticed a knocking noise around the front some where, i took it to the garage and he said it was the RV joint (velocity joint) so he changed them.
its still there but i think its getting more frequant now, this only happens when i go around corners or around roundabouts and around a corner up hill.
Im wandering now if maybe its the drive shaft, not knowing much at all about cars im asking for advise here before i venture back to the garage.
would a drive shaft make a knocking noise at all, or any advice on what else the prob might be.
Cheers

Knocking noise when turning usually means CV joint. So the garage has got the wrong fault maybe.0

It's the CV joint. The CV joint is part of the driveshaft - there's one on each end of each driveshaft. IF YOU DO NOT GET THIS FIXED, IT CAN FALL TO BITS AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.0 -

sorry i put RV joint i meant CV joint.
I had the left one done at a cost of £120 and it was still doing it so the other side was also done at another £120.
The knocking is still there so there must be something else wrong somewhere. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -
Hi, Yeah a common problem with some type of cars.
Had this CV joint problem on some of the Ford Mondeo's I have pre - owned.
It starts with a slight knocking noise, Then you turn the odd corner and you hear a loud creaking noise it sounds and feels like an old door being opened.
The problem only gets worse, Until you turn a corner or you are going downhill and - BANG!! the CV ball joint explodes into pieces awy from it's mounting.
I was once on a night shift, And I knew the wheel was unsafe.
I decided to take the chance and drive it home in the rush hour the following morning wondering if it would make it!
I did just, But I had to drive very slowly and turn the corners gently and not oversteer.
Typically, All the cars behind were beep beep 'Come on get a move on' as they do not giving a care in the world.
But sod them I wanted to get the car home without the wheel collapsing.
It may be that the other side is now going, As your garage repaired the worn CV joint?
Safety is paramount, And 99.9% garages will ENSURE your car wheel is safe to go on the road before you pick it up.
I saw a car only the other week that had turned a corner and Bang.
The 'Wishbone' had collapsed, the wheel was at 45 degrees inverted.
You might have to 'Nurse' the car round corners, And downhill until you can get it back to the garage.
These problems always seem to happen around Xmas time, And Bank Holidays when everything is on shutdown - Coming from experience.

thanks, both the CV joints have been done, itrust my garage ive used them all the time and i know he wouldnt rip me off.
the prob is the CV joints have been done but the knocking noise is still there, so something else must be wrong, what else can cause the knocking noise??All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -
hmmm Does the Car 'Wobble' when you are Driving?
I wonder if it could be the 'Shaft' or Wishbone?Thomson 757 Man0 -

no there is absolutly no wobble, no steering problem, when i drive in a straight line is perfectly ok, does not drift to the side.
the knocking only happens when i am at a junction say, and im turning left or right, i apply the gas and when the car starts to pull away there is a knocking sound somewhere around the wheels or in that area.
again if im turning a corner to go up hill it happens again, the knocking does no affect the steering such as juddering. there is no vibration.
the garage took it for a test run and said it was the Velocity joint, which was changed, but the prob was still there, so they changed the other one two (im presuming a car has 2 velocity joints)
i was just wondering if there is something else that will cause this noise. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -

They actually have 4, one at each end or each of the 2 drive shafts. (assuming 2 wheel drive).
Could still be quite a few things from wheel bearings, suspension strut top mount, ball joints etc etc. Take it back in;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
