My Mam has done that to me before. I've said I'm getting them xxx for Christmas/Birthday, so she goes out and buys it.

I've stopped telling her what I'm getting now! I get the children to do a big wish list and I pick off the things I'd like to buy them, then she gets the remains to pick from. That might be something to think about in the future.

It also keeps the children on their toes as they know they'll not get everything on their list, so it's still a surprise when they get up on Christmas morning.
Here I go again on my own....

I'm so glad both my parents and MIL live abroad now... they send money for us and I hope they'll do the same for Bean when he/she arrives :) Much easier!
If they don't though we'll work round it... Mum used to give people a couple of things to "choose" from to buy us when we were little including variable value items like pyjamas or slippers so those who didn't want to say how much they wanted to spend had something that left them free reign :)

  • You should be grateful that your DD has a grandmother who loves and cares about her as many don't give a toss.

You are being unreasonable, this is not being undermined, you're taking it a bit far. Swap the DVD player for something else and realise this is about your daughter, not you.

It's Christmas, have a glass of wine and a mince pie, peace and goodwill to all (wo)men, no?

In which case I'd tell her that I'm getting them a big box of Thorntons, a nice bottle of white wine and some luxury bubble bath.

Can't help but think you've missed a trick there.....;)

Just let it go there is only two days to Xmas and in the scale of things it's an annoyance. At least your MIL makes the effort, mine asks what DD wants, I tell her, she gives me the money, I buy it, wrap it, tag it and this year she doesn't even want to see her to give it to her! She her only blooming grandchild but I will not let it wind me up especially after reading on another thread that Jackieb's mum is going in for a masectomy today.

But that's what I wish my MIL would do!! In fact, the only sensible one who does this is my dad, and if he does buy something himself he always tells me first (but he does the wrapping and the giving himself).

Christmas afternoon up the in-laws is going to be a nightmare (again) because it's four lots of presents for DD and DS, there'll be an obsene amount of tat and although it sounds ungrateful, I haven't got houseroom for the enormous amount of gifts they'll be given, most of which aren't really what they want (plus I feel guilty at them getting so much when some have nothing, which sounds a bit pathetic, but I do feel like that). I'd so much rather they just bought one, or maybe two gifts each. Plus we've got to go through it all again on Boxing Day!!! Arrgggghhhhh. I need a bigger house!!!!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

I agree - it IS a big deal! It's p*ss annoying when you make an effort to get someone something they want, then someone else comes along, and despite knowing all this, go and get the same thing! It's RUDE!

Seriously, just take the DVD player back and get her a Nintendo Wii or something!

ps - I disagree with children having TVs in bedrooms!
oh I couldn't find the bit where the OP asked views of tv's in bedrooms. Was it written in invisible ink?

I just dislike the lack of thought effort. She's insistent that we all tell her what we want and then she just gives us the money to buy it. She doesn't even want to see it to wrap, no pretence. IMO that's not gift buying.

I just lie about what I want now and keep the money for the sales:D

  • Thanks everyone, I was pretty peeved when I posted, OH had been winding me up texting me, when I wasn't even fussed. She's going to open them both and the, because Satna's elves have made her a telly that's got a dvd player, some kind of communication problems going on in the North pole, she can decide if we send it back to Santa and ask for another present, did everyone know he's does exchanges?!?! Anyways, Happy Xmas Eve everyone!
