Impossible OH's & their Mothers.

What is about Xmas that makes people lose all sense of rationality?

OH and I agreed to get DD a dvd player for xmas, since hers was broken. OH's Mum decided she was going to buy her a tv, not that she needed a new one, hers works fine, but since we'd bought a pink dvd player, she was going to buy her a matching tv.

Today, OH has told me her Mum has bought her a tv with built-in dvd player. Because "she couldn't find a tv anywhere, and she has had to spend more than she planned to." Fine, says I, I'll take DD's back and get her something else.

But, OH wants to keep it, and use it downstairs, where we've got a Playstation we use for watching dvds. So I said no, what would be the point. At this OH decides she's going to tell her Mum to not bother and leave it her house, where we go 3 times a year.

I'm more mad at her Mum, she knew we'd bought DD a dvd player, so she should have gotten her something else instead, she didn't need a tv. Secondly, I'm mad at OH's over-reaction, I don't have a problem taking back the dvd player we bought.

I'd just take the DVD player back and get her something else, regardless of what your OH says!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    I'd just leave it.

She doesn't need a 2nd tv or a 2nd dvd player. So leaving it at her gran's house is probably common sense.

  • Personally I would leave you wife and mother in law to it, families hey lol

Take a deep breath it will all be over by next week.

It's hardly a big deal is it? If you don't want a pink DVD player downstairs either swap for a black/silver one or get a refund.

I did say we dont need one downstairs. And it is a big deal being undermined by the both of them.

I agree - it IS a big deal! It's p*ss annoying when you make an effort to get someone something they want, then someone else comes along, and despite knowing all this, go and get the same thing! It's RUDE!

Seriously, just take the DVD player back and get her a Nintendo Wii or something!

ps - I disagree with children having TVs in bedrooms!

Look that's MIL's for you! Mine always has to buy everyone the best presents - she even buys me stuff I want so my dad struggles!

I have now learnt to just let it ride - I told her I was going to buy OH a DS Lite - a week later she bought him one with bells on! (not literally)

Yeah they might have undermined you but take the DVD player back (regardless of what OH says) and buy her something even better - tell OH it's not fair for DD to lose out on a pressie. Know it's Christmas Eve but get something next week and surprise her on New Year - tell her Santa left an extra special gift because she has been so good - will make it even more special and magical (unless she doesn't believe anymore and then you'll just look silly)

Don't let it affect you too much - after all it's Christmas!!!:rotfl:

Where does the time go?
  • i dont like being overuled by my mil & dh either, but my dh likes to keep the peace. it sounds a if you have mil issues, like me !!

    you have these choices,
accept the gift off mil, and take the dvd player that you have bought back for refund or as dh says use downstairs, or you give your daughter the dvd you ahe bought the one mil has bought remains wastefully at her home.

Just let it go there is only two days to Xmas and in the scale of things it's an annoyance. At least your MIL makes the effort, mine asks what DD wants, I tell her, she gives me the money, I buy it, wrap it, tag it and this year she doesn't even want to see her to give it to her! She her only blooming grandchild but I will not let it wind me up especially after reading on another thread that Jackieb's mum is going in for a masectomy today.
