Looking For Wireless Internet (merged)

The Netgear one specified by BexTech is £40.04 on Collect and Go at PCW.
I checked as friends got a Buffalo cable one from PCW at £30 which did the job just fine0 -
I've been happy with my LinkSys BEFW11S4 at £25, only does 11Mbps on the wireless side, but considering I am only on 1Mbps at the moment (waiting for 4Mbps) and the wireless side is only used when people pop over with their laptops, sharing 1Mbps on the wireless side is adequately handled. I have my VoIP adaptor plugged into it too, for my phone service.
The Buffalo AirStation WYR-G54 is £30.59 at www.microwarehouse.co.uk
Edit: Once you go wireless, I strongly advise you to change the default password on the router, change the default Wireless Network Name(SSID), possibly switch off Wireless SSID Broadcast, and ensure you set up security mode such as WEP, so only people who have the access key can log on and use your broadband connection, otherwise anyone could use up your bandwidth and any usage limits you have. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
hi
i have a modem so ill be buying the wireless router now. can i buy just one of these and would i get internet on 2 of my laptops ..i already have broadband on 1..but i dont have any broadband on the other0 -
If you have the supplied broadband modem from Telewest and the laptops have built-in wireless adaptor or a LAN port (for non-wireless connection) then yes, once you get the router you will be able to share it with all your other machines, but do ensure you set up the security otherwise you could be sharing it with others within a 100m or so radius. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Most modern laptops have a built-in wireless card and it will also do autodiscovery once you broadcast the relative info from the router.
But if the laptops are a few years old, you might need to buy some wireless connection cards. Those for 802.11b standard are quite cheap. I think they seel for around 5-6 pounds nowadays on ebuyer, and can easily be plugged in a PCMCIA spare port on the laptop.0 -
