My wish for Woolies was that the staff got all the bargains possible and either made use of them personally or flogged them on ebay to keep them going whilst they hopefully find other employment.
After that, anyone who could get what they considered to be a bargain - good luck to them (and if it was almost final closing time - good luck if they took as much as they could carry/afford). It's not as if it is going to be preventing someone else from walking in the store tomorrow and buying the items is it. It's only greed when the offer is available to the majority, but a minority spoil it by taking/ordering huge quantities.
And to any Woolies staff reading this thread.....good luck for the coming year and in your search for a new job.0 -
Oh well, My OH is happy. I got him enough spiral bound A4 notebooks (16p) to last him the next five years or so. And pens, staples, Pritt Sticks, polyfiles and glue ditto. Batteries, paintbrushes, yet more craft bits and bobs...I spent £13 and got two huge bags full. The guy in front of me pulled a bulging trolley through and spent £193!!!
One thing that was happening did catch my eye. There were a couple of dozen families in who were clearly working to a system. They had grabbed most of the trollies and had filled them to the brim with the best of the stuff left then rather than go and pay at 80% off were basically sitting there waiting for the next reduction to be announced. The member of staff I talked to about this said they had all arrived at opening time and done this, and it was now 3pm. She said her manager was incensed because almost everything worth selling was in these fifty trollies so had decided that he was not going to reduce anything any further, but keep them sitting there untill they froze and then announce the tills would be closing in ten minutes.
I wonder if he stuck to his guns? I will find out because I know her from the school gate. The folk that were going through the tills were shaking the staff's hands and wishing them luck. It was all very sad. i'm all for getting a bargain and I was in there too, but the err....unsporting tactics of the above folk was rather leaving a bad taste in the mouth.Val.0 -
on the bus on the way home tonight, we went past woolies (peterborough) just as the manager was locking up the doors for the last time, there seemed to be a photographer from the local paper taking pics of him doing it.
i hope all the staff managed to grab some bargains (i doubt it, there hasnt been much left for a week) and they manage to find work quickly0 -
I drove all the way to dunstable only to find the store was closed
I got there at 3pm. It must've shut early:rolleyes: anyway, well done to everyone who managed to grab a few bargains and best of luck to all ex woolies employees. I hope you find a new job ASAP.

To the customers eyes no - the staff had there pick of everything saved weeks in advance! Our local staff did lol, good on them!0 -
In case anyone missed the woollies sale you can now buy most items on ebay at a premium. Seems that greedy ebayers have been buying up woollies stock and profiteering from it. Some people are selling their carrier bags and till receipts as "collectors items of the future". You can even buy pick & mix, a shopping trolley or even the 50% off sale signs for a bargain price of £20! Ok if it's uselful I can imagine someone buying it but is a used bag and till receipt really worth it.
OK, fair enough if staff sell their items, good on them but I would say that most woollies items on ebay are being sold by the likes of people mentioned earlier due to the duplicate and number of woollies items they have listed. If Woolworths couldn't sell it at a discount to the general public what makes them think they can?

I'll openly admit to buying 'stock' from Woolies for going on eBay. Went to a couple of stores on their last day and got a few bargains. One CD which they had loads of... I bought a few copies in the 5 for £1 deal at one store, and more for 99p each at other stores. They've been selling on eBay (and surprisingly quickly) for between 5 and 6 quid each.
Woolies get their stuff sold, I make a profit and people on eBay get brand new CDs for less than they would in most other places... can't think of any losers (fair enough... other people might have wanted the discs, but considering the quantity that were still there in the last few hours of several stores' closing days... it's unlikely!).0 -
When I went to the Harrow store on the closing day the manager said over the tannoy, everyone buy as much as you can and sell it at car boots or on ebay.0

Any chance this was Big W in Edinburgh? I went along at about 1.30 ish and there were loads of people at the back of the shop just waiting about and had trollys overstacked with stuff. I had went in to see if any baby dolls were left and they had at least 5 in each of there trollys. The shelves were pretty empty. I thought this was just plain greedy. I hope the manager didn't reduce them any more.0 -
