I wonder if we asked Martin to write to the Top 4 supermarkets and give us a list of all their price increases / decreases each week if they would comply!!

My silly pet hate is the products that are over-charged by a penny from the SEL - and don't even ask me how I know! I never get it refunded, but it bugs me all the same!

Maybe because there are actually two different SELs. I've noticed this recently - saw the different prices when shopping and was ready to challenge if charged the higher price. In both cases, the till came up with the lower price so I kept quiet. Perhaps the prices were just about to go up when I purchased and now they have changed the till price but left the SEL.

The only answer to all this is STOP USING SUPERMARKETS!!!!!

If everyone went back to using their local stores, farmers markets, etc then the supermarkets, Tesco in particular, wouldn't have the control and dominance they do! Everyone moans about supermarkets and how they are taking over, but that's only because people allow them to!

Do something about it NOW before we no longer have a choice

Nice idea, but I work 37 hours a week and don't drive and my husband works in excess of 50 hours a week. We simply do not have time to go from shop to shop.

I am happy to pay a bit extra for the convenience of ample free parking, plenty of choice and free carrier bags.

Yes but where do you imagine that lettuce was grown? We are so spoilt these days. We expect everything to be available all year round and this costs money. Either the produce has to be forced in greenhouses (pricey) or imported (similarly pricey.)

Buy your produce from a local market, that's where'll you'll get the best price. Start getting used to the fact that locally-grown stuff (locally = in the UK) has seasons and will not be available all year round.

I used to work on a local market. The fruit and veggies are pants and last just a few days at the moment, I buy an iceberg lettuce from Tesco I can stick it in the fridge for 2 weeks - the stuff from the local market is usually starting to go off by the end of the day.

Also, I gave up buying there when you could see the fruit and veg stored out the front looking all nice and then when they get it from their boxes at the bag you get the smallest, crappiest stuff stuff that they have for sale. I was buying Strawberries and they were rotting by the time I was getting home (probably after having been sat in the sun all day). I prefer to pay a little bit more so I do not have to eat it right away.

I guess we are paying 'extra' for the priviledge of it being stored in the best conditions for optimum life. I've only just thrown some fruit out of my fridge as it was starting to look a bit manky and I was sorting for my Xmas shop and it was still in an opened bag which was dated the end of October.

I do not get why people moan about the cost of stuff - walk away and shop elsewhere, unless you are wanting to do your shop over 4 or 5 different shops then you just take what is there - I am sure I'd spend more in petrol doing that as well. It is all swings and roundabouts, some stuff is cheaper some stuff costs more - it happens in every supermarket, not just Tesco.

Doesn't everyone love to moan about Tesco? I wonder why they are the UK's most successful retailer?

We always shop there and invariably get the best deals. They take ALL our coupons, whether we buy the items or not and their customer service is second to none: if we have a problem, it's always sorted quick-time.
  • Someone above said shop with your feet.
And I always do exactly that.
The strange thing is that my feet always bring me to Tesco.
I find them to be actually very good.
OK not as good as Asda however Mr T is only 10min walk away while Asda is 15min driving, which although not far is out of reach for me as I do not drive.
Local market is 30min walk (no way to walk back if you are loaded with groceries) and the cab back will cost me an extra £7.00 or £6.00
In my case Mr T is the best value for money around.

Do our shopping at Tesco, Lidl and local fruit/veg market. Over past year shopping basket cost has increased 20/25% across the board. Lidl do have regular price cuts on certain foods, e.g. fruit/veg one month, meat the next month.

Does that make our shopping cheaper?? People will only EVER buy the cheapest option, as it is, supermarkets offer a wider range of products at a cheaper cost, than the local grocery or butcher could ever do.

I can for example buy my meat more cheaply at one end of the shop, and opt to buy a cheap DVD player in the same store, or I could run from piller to post in the pouring rain to each individual local shop (prob within 3-4 miles of one another), pay an excess in the price, and tally up the various receipts for a total cost.

As an average working class shopper, I know which one I would find more of a "convenience".

I have 1 Tesco local to me, then I have Asda about 5 miles away, no local groceries, butchers, clothing shops, mini marts are anywhere near me, (handy if you have a car for the job). But whichever way I look at it, I am still limited to Tesco unless I am prepared to travel out of my locality.

  • At the end of the day Tesco's are a business like any other and their primer purpose is to MAKE A PROFIT, because of all the supermarkets now there are strict competition laws which means one supermarket can't severely undercut another on one particular product (as that would be anti competitive and they would incur serious fines) so I guess what you are saying is we would like the prices of our products to be consistent week to week, the trouble with this is then we wouldn't change between supermarkets as we would KNOW we would get our particular shopping at a certain price, week to week and the supermarkets, who are always vying to become market leaders and pinch customers from each other, would not be able to do so, this is why they do 'special offers', bogoffs etc, to entice new customers in from competitors, but to counteract the loss they would make in some of these offers they have to hike up the price on some of their other products to keep their profit margins up, it's all about knowing and pre empting what they think customers will buy and what they want to buy

I'm not saying this is right or wrong but that's the way of the supermarket business.

As for shopping locally, the reason this has died a death is not just because the rise of the supermarkets have closed down a lot of local independent food suppliers, but also our lifestyles have changed so we don't have as much free time available now for shopping. Women years ago didn't work so would go their local shops daily to buy food, we don't have the time to do that now, and where there are local shops, parking/public transport is a problem, this is easy and free at supermarkets

And if prices aren't going up, the products themselves are shrinking - Schloer down from 1l to 750ml, and Loyd Grossman sauces down from something like 475g to 325g.
