  • how exactly are they ripping you off? do you know what their mark-up margins are? do you know exactly what their balance shets look like? clearly not! do you even realise that supermarkets actually have the smallest mark-ups per item they sell around?

if you think a store like tesco is ripping you off you need to get out more. prices go up. prices go down. if you see a price you aren't willing to pay, don't pick the item up. sounds straight forward enough to me.

although if shops changing their prices bothers you that much, find a patch of ground and grow your own food, i hear tesco are doing some great deals on seeds at the moment :rotfl:

Regarding growing my own food..... I do, but cannot yet grow Carr's Water Biscuits!

I don't buy any meat or fresh food at Tesco as it's all either low quality (or available at an inflated premium......... mmm Tesco Finest.... or not as the case may be) or it's available locally for a much better price and much fresher quality.

Regarding me needing to get out more.............. look at your own activity Spongebob (sorry, Squarepants) - I don't feel the need to blindly criticise people I don't know who are just stating how things are without looking at the facts . . . THEY HAVE PUT PRICES UP THIS WEEK!!!

Regarding seeds........... not sure what sort you use, but it sounds to me like you smoke em behind Tesco's when you're on your lunch-break........ once again though........

    YOU'RE FUNNY!!!
  • even if i had an emergency and had to leave my trolley half way through a shop i would have the decency to give it to a member of staff so it could be dealt with straight away.

FYI Spongebob............ I'm not sure if I've ever had an errmm 'emergency' in Tesco's (or any other supermarket for that matter) but I believe they sell things for that on the 2nd aisle called Tenalady...........
  • i think captain f was correct in all he did and my hats off to him , he took a stance , this is about the timing not the cost of sourceing products , the increase came when they have a captive market nad its very very hard to source the xmas shop elsewhere , they exploited the customers

next yr im taking a stance , ill be doing the baker/greengrocer/butcher shopping and dropping a main shop i will pop in but only to exploit the bogof offers and grab some bogroll if i cant find an alternative source locally
  • Thanks Izzzythedog - Yup, it was all about the timing that really got me - they know they have an almost 'captive audience' and they were attempting to take advantage of that. Once I realised this I left the store more out of disgust than anything else......... they used to get my hard earned cash all year round but after this 'seasonal stunt' this has forced me to look at them in a different light. As I've already said in my postings, I buy all my fresh food / meat locally as it is usually better quality at a better price, but when you do your big xmas shop you don't expect the corporates to milk you when it suits them.............. shame on Tesco's and Asda's for doing this when people least need to be squeezed - and re Spongebob's comments........... (in your own words) ROTFL :rotfl:

Their turnover was £47,298 million up to 02/2008, with GP of £2603million
4.5% profit to run a company contributing all that money to the UK economy isn't excessive in my opinion :)

I must be the only one with local shops more expensive than Tesco. People moan about theprice of Tesco and to buy locally but meat in our local butcher is nearly twice as expensive - which at this current moment I cannot afford regardless as we are watching the pennies.

Likewise the Farm Shop, pasta costs 4 times as much as the supermarket as it is some fancy make, pasta suace is double what it is in the supermarket, they do some 'home made' prepared foods and they are 6 times what the supermarket charges (restaurant prices). If I had this much money to shop locally I'd not be worrying about a few pence more on something in Tesco.

I guess like it or lump it the Supermarkets give us what we need in one place, plus they do cheaper ranges to save us some money.

I have recently moved and the only 'local food store is a butchers up the road where sausages are around £4 a pound. Which I cannot afford - and no special offers on. And that is before we start on the cost of meat. Turkeys are £50 upwards there and I certainly cannot afford that much on a turkey. There are no local greengrocers, just supermarkets or quite a drive to a farm shop - but then it means spending the money on petrol to get it as well.

Yes but where do you imagine that lettuce was grown? We are so spoilt these days. We expect everything to be available all year round and this costs money. Either the produce has to be forced in greenhouses (pricey) or imported (similarly pricey.)

Buy your produce from a local market, that's where'll you'll get the best price. Start getting used to the fact that locally-grown stuff (locally = in the UK) has seasons and will not be available all year round.

Who wants to eat an iceberg lettuce in December anyway? Go and buy a swede and grate it up and eat it raw. Yum. :D

Do they think their customers are stupid and will just buy the same again without noticing the price hikes?!

They don't have to "think" it. They have till rolls and clubcard data that proves it beyond all reasonable doubt.
