We will be left with empty shopping centres where the 'ferral' kids hang out ( I hate that word)
Big tesco stores on the outside edge of town which seem like some futuristic world, huge places that you cant find the exit of and you walk round and round filling your trolley. They sell everything at massive prices as there is no competition. Outside sit huddle together homeless ppl and big issue sellers.
Thats what we COULD end up with...Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
1 was a traditional pub. The second was a pub !!! chinese restaurant and the 3rd a traditional pub !!! children's pub with play area that also catered for children's parties, so am not convinced it is totally to do with the smoking ban (except for pub 1).EssexHebridean wrote: »Pubs are suffering badly as a result of the smoking ban though - you can expect to see plenty more going the way of those three as things continue to tighten as people choose to drink more cheaply at home where they can smoke rather than going out to pay more for their alcohol and have to stand in the cold for a fag as well.
whoever asked about c & a- am pretty sure it closed end of 2000 early 2001.0 -

Really, that recent? Could well be. I just thought it was carp when I went in as a studentin the 1990'sand it isn;t around now. It did well to last another decade.
Something has to give doesn't it? Only so much money to go around and billions being spent in a few supermarkets and online. Then some millions spent locally through practical convenience/targetted spending.
Everyone fighting for the few (rapidly reducing) millions left over.0 -
Maybe the landlords could drop the rent on the shops? Sounds silly, but then some rent is better than no rent.0

Much like America?
Well, Orlando anyway!0 -
I was in Jessops today and the difference in stock levels compared with my visit last Christmas was sooo noticeable. Items had been sold from racks on the wall and there was nothing being put in their place.0

Skipton has just been named Britain's best high street ,if the judges come back in the New Year I think they will be lucky to find many shops open ,although the shoe repair shop is doing very well.
I love Skipton, although I don't remember the shoe repair shop! Look on the bright side - if people can't afford foreign holidays you may get more tourist trade! Visit the castle and picnic in the grounds of the church, wander through the shops and the market. Not far from the steam railway. Got any jobs in the tourist information office?

The big ones don't see it like that.jm28cardiff wrote: »Maybe the landlords could drop the rent on the shops? Sounds silly, but then some rent is better than no rent.
In my immediate area we have a blend of shops owned by the folowing;
1; local ''bigwig landlords''; own few properties. They are manageing their portfolios to protect their investments. They have reduced rents for some traders and capped rent increases. They have an interest in the local area and are connected to thir tenants somewhat.
2; Freeholds; many now have no mortgage, are characterful but have tiny overheads. Business rates are neglible. If we had bought a freehold a decade back...we would be in a strong position now....but we couldn't have raised the £££ for one plus our unit was never for sale in the first place.
3; shops like mine that are owned by the devil reborn......a fatcat, property investment company managing corp pension funds.
We are the beginning of their food chain....but we are only still there because we are good (not talking meself up or anything) and 99% of their tenants are now chains, paying top whack rents from private equity funding or Icelandic pyramid svhemes.....and ooops....all those streams of revenue are now being challenged.
But Mr Mock Tudor (hanging onto his Mayfair office status for dear life) hasn't quite got his head around the changes going on down here in the bottom of the pond.0 -
A company I used to work for has just had the administrators in this week.!!!
They had a chain of craft shops which mostly closed on Sunday.
I gave my notice in in APril, which I a m thinking is a good thing for me. My colleagues are obviously worrying now with christmas this week.
Here's hoping to a brighter new year for everyone. Can't think of anything funny to put here!
