Two additional factors in this collapse of the British High St have been the absurd charges levied by greedy councils and their restrictions on parking. The effects have been visible the length and breadth of the country, with traditional shopping streets becoming dominated by charity shops and empty windows.

If some of the retail park monsters who have benefited from this start to suffer, I, for one, won't grieve - particularly if Comet and Currys lead the parade!

I reckon they will use the January sales to clear out their stock and as you say clear out by end of January. But lets be honest the ones which are going down could only survive in Browns miracle economy of free money. They were never going to survive in the real world so i say good riddance as they mark the end to a mental era of gordonomics.
Part of what you say is true, however, there are a lot of good stores going too. There has also been an Inside Track thingy going on over the past few years that has ramped up rents based on false valuations. Rent reductons and incenticves have been cloaked...cannot be used for evidence in rent reviews.
The Icelandic Pyramid scheme (Bauger connected businesses + Kevin Stanford) didn't help things either.

Aaaagh I 'wanna' post so much but can't as I am strapped for time and energy.

I am in the middle of a rent review and the whole thing is a total scam....and I am paying for ''experts'' to work on my behalf....and they are all in on the scam. All trying to prop up their 'Mock Tudor Lifestyles (a la Pickled Pink)....and I am so angry, I can't even put it into a coherent senetence at the mo.

But I got lucky recently and got thrown a lifeline by a guardian angel :A

though it is up to me to follow through the opportunity.

I promise I will update at some point....but what you read in the press is not how it really is.

Max pls PM me the town...I am so curious...from a professional point of view....promise I am not a wierdo, internet stalker or anything.
  • well im glad that i live in brighton, where we have the lanes and north laines lovely areas full of independent shops and businesses ll ding a brisk vibrant trade!!
the london road area near where i live is fast becoming a no go zone with its closed down chain stores!!
£5000 debt cleared thanks to MSE advice :money:

Skipton has just been named Britain's best high street ,if the judges come back in the New Year I think they will be lucky to find many shops open ,although the shoe repair shop is doing very well.

:hello: :hello: I have posted here a lot on my problems with being an Indie retailer....and I am in Brighton.
What you love about the area is being gradually chipped away at...what most Brightonians don't realise is that 80% of our turnover comes from tourism. You obviously haven't been chatting to Lanes and North Laines retalers for a while.

Brightonians think that we will all just keep at it as Costa and Starbucks rental levels push out trading costs up and up for ever and ever.......

It takes 3 or 4 years for rent increases to impact a sole trader. They keep at it, it's what they do, they don't want to get bankrupted by the evil landlord.

Different types of businesses are being affected in different ways. I am in clothing and every Indie clothing stiore left in N Laine has another off shoot to their business....whether that be internet sales, wholesale or even something on the side that is highly profitable that needs a little wash STS.

The whole Jubilee devt has impacted massively on the N Laine traders rent levels...but that's OK yeh? We have Aldo Zilli and Gourmet Burger 2 4 1 offers instead now?

My shop is now up to let as I have lost a trumped up rent review....and likely candidates for my lease are Boden (who would like a little bit of niche pie to augment their catalogue/internet sales) and an Ye Olde Tea Shoppe company who want to start a new chain.

And I was first in my St. 11 yrs ago. It was derelict.

How much do you actually spend in Indie stores?

I feel we are now just part of a Real life Land Theme Park.

And you know what? I am not going to end up a statistical victim either.
I am ''killing'' myself to move forward to retail my procduct in a different way.
Ok I got lucky this summer and grabbed my opportunity as it came along and have launched into Internetland with my wares BUT, if I stay and fight it out in Real Life Land...I will lose.......
