Really, that recent? Could well be. I just thought it was carp when I went in as a studentin the 1990'sand it isn;t around now. It did well to last another decade.

Something has to give doesn't it? Only so much money to go around and billions being spent in a few supermarkets and online. Then some millions spent locally through practical convenience/targetted spending.

Everyone fighting for the few (rapidly reducing) millions left over.
The reason I remember is my eldest was born march 2000 and I recall getting him a coat from there when it had been announced it was closing but hadn't yet shut. Later that year we desperately needed me working p-time and I got one just before I saw an advert asking for Christmas temp staff to work for c and a till store it closed down.

Apologies to anyone if they thought I was being rude re the exclamation marks in the other part of the post. I had actually put 'pub come restaurant' but spelt come the slang way. I don't have the dirty mind the swear filter does.;)

I forgot to add The Pier in Brighton has closed. Still stock inside all over the place but shop abandoned. I wonder if the staff got paid?

It would make a great temporary let....if I can get shot of my lease, I would have a ''Pop Up Shop'' in there.

Watch out for a new breed of retailer.

In the last recssion, temp lets prevented squatters and usually sold clearance stock etc.

Now, new retailers will have chance to try out a new concept in Real life Land...backed up with an internet presence and a strong brand name....it's going to develop over the next few years. An antidote to Clone Town UK.

The new business rates laws will help this trend in retailing too.
  • some of the shops i feel wont last long.

loads of neighbourhood pubs. there are far too many and loads of them empty most of the time. same goes for takeaways, too many of them, wonder how they make a profit. on second thoughts maybe a lot of people dont cook unlike me, so probably the takeaways might still have booming business.

betting shops, there are far too many of them. either the nation has gone mad and spends their grocery money on betting or people are printing money. how can some town centres justify endless number of betting shops.

small bakeries, sandwich shops, they will go bust as people tighten belts and make their own sandwiches. wonder how some of them make a profit. bought a belly buster sandwich the other day and could barely eat half the thing, if i had eaten anymore the floor would have given way under me and it didnt cost much. dont know how the shop could afford to sell at their prices. many of the takeaways etc give too big portions and do that probably because they arent good with budgetting.

zavvi, curry, comet, jessops, house of fraser, officerswhatever i cant remember the name of the clothing chain with perpetual discounts, sportswear shops, never could understand the fad of wearing sportswear by all and sundry even if they werent going to the gym and some wearing the sports gear dont look like they have been to a gym in the last century.

too mant magazines being published, especially the junk variety, wonder who buys them, guess quite a few of them will be going bust too.

quite a few b&bs / small hotels will go bust. some seem to exist in the middle of no where. wonder how they get customers.

ryan air and all the cheap airlines. anyone who offers one pound fares etc is MAD, that wont even cover the cost the check in procedures forget the flight. such airlines NEED to go bust. people dont need 10 holidays a year anyway which is what the 1£ tickets encourage.

modern art (fart rather) museums. wonder why public money gets wasted in funding half the crap that gets passed for modern art. half of them would vanish in a day if they were to rely on tickets to maintain themselves.

although i do try to buy from the local shop as often as i can even if sometimes the price is higher so that the shop is still around next year. but their days are numbered i guess with the proliferation of the chains.

guess shops like halfords etc must be feeling the pinch with other shops like tescos etc eating into their product lines

used to go sometimes to M&S to buy food items but never liked most of the other stuff they peddle. too expensive for me. so wont be surprised if they dont do well with the economy tanking.

anyway other than grocery i dont shop around much now. oops other than loads of dvds but thats come down now since i recently took sky after sticking to freeview all these years. guess i am the boring kind that spends time at home with wifey and kid and too much time on MSE and internet in general and xbox / comp gaming. lucky that wife isnt the shopping kind either. both busy trying to pay off mortgage ASAP before inflation hits big time and the interest rates go up again steeply since the govt is busy printing money. plan on being debt free hopefully when the interest rates go sky high. plan on running my present car till it dies, same with computer and everything else, still using my old 21" CRT TV (but admit did splurge on hometheatre + projector when we got married to indulge in my movie craze) plan on using that telly till it goes bust. thought of a lcd/plasma large screen tv but guess that can wait till after the mortgage is paid. so i guess people like me wont be helping consumer companies to survive, but what the heck i have to look after my backside first because i dont want family to suffer if the !!!! hits the fan and pension etc becomes worthless or get made redundant.

Not being funny, but you would be feeling very ripped off and quite restricted without business competition. Sometimes the market may seem flooded with a certain type of business, but if they are all surviving it can only be a good thing, after all keeps things competitive.
The government encourages enterprise as it employs people and they get there taxes. A lot of businesses that you have mentioned are very viable. Take for instance the budget airlines, they are in-fact both in the top three most successful airlines in our country second only to British Airways. Budget airlines not only get subsidised by other countries for bringing in tourism, they also make good money from the amount of cargo they carry in the hold, hence the limited amount of baggage you are allowed.

B&B will always be needed, and as the pound weakens the more attractive we become as a tourist destination. British people also cant afford to holiday as much when the pound is week, so I imagine B&B’s will do very well out of the current economic situation, especially as some peoples idea of a holiday is somewhere remote and quiet.
I personally believe that the free/subsidised museum and exhibits are part of what makes our country great. It almost certainly helps tourism and local businesses.
I agree some shops that haven’t moved with the times need a shake up or they are destined to close, however there are still a lot of viable businesses in our country.
I own 3 profitable companies all of which are at least 15% up on last year. I think if you know your market and are willing to adapt there’s still a place for small/medium sized business in Britain.

C and A went down (in the 1990's I think).

Not so.C&A is a Dutch company. It decided to pull out of the UK because the market was too competitive and expand in Eastern Europe, where it could make more profits.

At much the same time M&S pulled out of various countries, including France, but didn't actually go bust of course.

Radio Rentals was basically a victim of improved technology and cheap overseas mass production of electronics. Outdated business models (Woolworths is another one) often tend to finally give up the ghost in recessions.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
  • i do like museums but not the modern art ones and wonder if most of it is art at all. hence my mention about that.

i do agree that competetion is a good thing.

coming to the budget airlines offering 1£ fares. i dont think that sort of thing should be encouraged when public transport is not exactly great outside the bigger cities and one is forced to use a car to get to work. for a half hour journey by car to work fromwhere i used to live earlier, if i had used public transport instead i would have had to leave home (in a city) by 0540am to be at work by 8am. things like that dont encourage public transport use. i managed without a car till a couple of years ago and was forced to buy one when i moved to that area as spending 4h a day in public transport just wasnt an option when by car i could do it in less than an hour a day. same goes for trains in uk, it is so expensive, i remember when i was unemployed and needed to go to an interview at the last minute to london and landed up at newcastle train station at night to find that the ticket costed something like 270£ for the next available train. i didnt go for the interview, pretty sure half the train must have been empty. couldnt get a bus as it was full. cant understand what sort of economy would allow a more cost effective means of transport like trains to be priced more than hundred times an airfare. absolute madness. even goods etc (not the perishable kind) are cheapest to transport by trains or ships etc and not by air but the bloody govt just is keen on increasing runways at airports instead of investing more in public transport and trains.

I love Skipton, although I don't remember the shoe repair shop! Look on the bright side - if people can't afford foreign holidays you may get more tourist trade! Visit the castle and picnic in the grounds of the church, wander through the shops and the market. Not far from the steam railway. Got any jobs in the tourist information office? :D

I love Skipton and it is very busy with tourists, even at this time of year ,I am a friend of Skipton castle and so go and visit often for a cup of tea and cake and I have a narrow boat moored in the town it is a great place to visit and right on the edge of the Dales.
This week alone we will be losing 3 shops Ponden mill ,woolworths and Hamiltons a [ladies clothes shop] last 3 months the toy shop ,a cafe ,the china shop ,3 clothes shops and a pet shop ,even in the last recession i cannot remember losing as many shops.

All part of the repair process we need to go through, we need to clear out the dead wood before we can move on.
