Sorry to hijack OP thread but my sister has same message:
    <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

She has a HP PC about 5 years old. A few days ago she updated zonealarm and then could not access internet.

She tried to do a system restore but didn't work.

She tried to reboot and now all she has is a black screen with the message above.

    What are her options?

Will she lose all her stuff?

She doesn't have any discs to reinstall but I have my Dell reinstallation XP Home edition (including service pack 1) approx 4-5 years old, would that work with her PC?

Will she need any codes or anything?

I am going up to visit her in approx an hour any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

keep pressing F8 on bootup to get the 'safe mode' screen
    select SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
    Download Revo uninstaller

Hopefully that will get rid of any zonealarm thats left

    Thanks for the response.

As she lives 10 miles away is there anyway I could put the download on a pen drive or similar to take with me in case she still can't access? I have 2 pen drives 32MB and 512MB would it fit on these?
