That's not good at all. Although to be sure you'd need to check in the BIOS, it looks as though it doesn't support booting from USB.

Your remaining options are very limited. I can really think of only 2:

Take it to a repair shop
Remove the hard disk, install it in the fat PC, repair Windows, put it back in the laptop.

The first will (probably) be expensive.

The second will require an adaptor which costs maybe £4, but if you're not used to doing that sort of thing it will not be at all easy to do.

I know, because I used to have a Thinkpad that could not be booted from CD, so that was the rigmarole I had to go through to re-install Windows on it. Funnily enough I didn't like doing that, so I flogged it on Ebay...
  • ill buy an adaptor and try the hard disk (soon )

Thanks alot for your time and help.:)

Something like ebay.co.uk item 250346032426 should do the trick.

Not quite true - it's probably still there, just out of reach, in the Recycle Bin...

I could be wrong, but I believe that when AVG deletes files it COMPLETELY deletes them

I suspect that you're right. If a file is quarantined it goes into a hidden directory called /$avg8.vault$, but if deleted I'm fairly sure they are gone for good.

If the PC and Laptop have the same version of XP installed, there's a chance that just copying /windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe from the PC to laptop would work, but I confess I've never tried that.

Otherwise ebay.co.uk item 330295935713 would be better, as the OP could install/repair the laptop HHD directly on the PC, but it would mean more effort opening up the case, finding a spare connector, etc...
