having used my one month trial at lovefilm (i just got an extra two weeks when trying to cancel!) and now on the screenselect trial, i have to say both services have their advantages and disadvantages.
i've found lovefilm to be very slow on ocassions and really quick on others. i have been really annoyed with their customer service though. a couple of dvds did not turn up and it has taken nearly two weeks for them to sort out. not too much of a problem as im on the trial, but this would be totally unacceptable if i was a paying customer. they have good quality dvds though but the price is expensive at £19.99.
screenselect also has a wide range of films and is £5 cheaper for 3 discs. a BIG plus is they have given me all the top films i have requested so far. lovefilm where sending dvds from way down the list. the quality of dvds seems to be poor though....the ones i have received have had dirt and/or some scracthes on them. most of them play ok but one film did stop playing part way through and another friend has experienced the same problem.0 -
I have a free trial account with Lovefilm at present.
However, can one advise whats the best method to cancel an account before i get charged? Should i return all DVD back and remove all titles from selection box, or shall one cancel the credit card debit arrangement then return DVDs. Just curious because if i send DVDs back today, they will automatically send me 3 new ones out on receipt.0 -
You cannot cancel a credit card arrangement yourself (I think the name is continuous authority).
This is a major reason why they are less desirable than direct debits.
To get a continuous authority cancelled you have to go via the company you placed it with.0 -

I mean to cancel my monthly contract via the DVD company website online via my account, via option Cancel membership.0 -

If you go to "Your account" at lovefilm and click on cancel it tells you all about it.
Once you've cancelled via the site, they won't send you any more DVDs, and you must return any you have before your billing day otherwise they will charge you for a full month, (and you won't get any more DVDs!)0 -
I'm not saying you should be but, if you are concerned about a continuous payment authority you can always have your card cancelled. It is a lot more hassle than a DD but at least you know that payments should not be made. Contacting any reputable company with your wishes is usually enough though.0

I do not believe that closing a credit card will stop a continuous authority.
I agree that "usually" most reputable companies will cancel but personally I have heard enough stories that have gone wrong that I prefer to KNOW I can cancel with a DD.
Here's one story involving a reputable company

I've seen too many of these for my liking.0 -
I have been a member of Screenselect for one week now and received six movies so far, the first three days after joining. I am so impressed with the service I am going to continue after my trial period, the service is absolutley fantastic and so easy to use. There is a far greater choice of movies than one of the major high street outlets I used before so I hope they continue to grow.Rememember. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.
