If you don't want to do garlic bread, you can do herb bread - just mix your butter with dried herbs and use that on a french stick cut almost the way thru, diagonally, wrap it in foil and pop in the oven for 10 mins0

Right lasagne it is, with a nice salad and come herb bread, a touch of garlic but not too much to scare him away!! I will go for your idea Frugal and is a french stick. I have all day so I can get it ready with as much time as I need thank goodness. I wish I had individual dishes but I don't so I will have to make it in a pyrex dish and serve it cut up. Oh I am looking forward to it now. I will report back with the results! Thank you all :-)0

Have a lovely time :j As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add this to the existing thread, whcih may give you more ideas.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Not sure if anyone will see this as the thread has been merged but I did say I would report back. I went for lasagne, salad and a shop bought tear and share herb bread.
I almost had a disaster with the white sauce, I wanted to use a shop bought one just as I was making the bolognese sauce already and I am not great at making white sauces but when I looked none of the jars on sale were vegetarian. Luckily, I saw a friend whilst standing in sainsburys almost about to have a melt! She suggested a pot of cheese pasta sauce and it worked wonderfully!! I used pringles for the topping and they made it really crunchy. I have to say I was quite impressed with the finished product, it did look really good.
It went down very well, he said is was lovely and ate the whole thing so it can't have been that bad. I enjoyed it too.
Thank you all for your help!!!!! He said he will cook for me next, I can't wait!!0 -
Hmm, I'm a little doubtful of the spag bol idea only because I'm likely to get whiplash from a stray spaghetti strand and have it end up either on my forehead or on my front ... either way a sure fire way to impress, not.
This takes me back to when me and OH first started dating, I used to order spag bol everytime we went out and then spend about half an hour trying to eat it without making a mess, one at a time I kid you not lol, which usually meant I ended up exhausted at the end of the meal and not having eaten much lol. To which OH would say are you gonna finish that, clearly her wasn't as eager to please me with his table mannersMummy to two beautiful girls and one gorgeous boy.0 -

Hi,
I am after a bit of help/ advice and thought this would be the best place to ask but feel free to redirect me if it isn't...
I have started seeing someone in the last 3 weeks and have invited him round tomorrow night for dinner. Having been out of the dating game for a few years and embraced a very money-saving lifestyle, I am not too sure what to cook so thought I would ask for ideas that don't involve steak lol... He seems to like pretty much anything meat and fish wise and the only thing he is not keen on is chinese food.
Thank you for any input - it is much appreciated!
PS - meant to say, wanted to do something a bit 'posh' as opposed to spag bol or something like that... I am sure he would appreciate it as he doesnt seem to be able to cook much himself but as it's the first time, it's worth making an effort I think...0 -
What about roast lamb? It tastes yummy fresh and makes sandwiches for a week. If that's too expensive, pork or chicken is also very good.0

I cooked this Waitrose recipe as one of the first meals for my DH (the apple juice gives it a lovely flavour) and it's still one of his favourites now
http://www.waitrose.com/recipe/Toad_in_the_Hole.aspx
I lay the sausages on the bottom then put the onions on top so they're peeking out of the batter and go crispy as they can make the yorkshire pudding a bit soggy if they're at the bottom.
I don't buy the ingredients from Waitrose, I just use bog standard Tesco sausages and I've found buying the pack of 3 lunchbox-size cartons of Value apple juice to be the most economical (and you can save the other 2 cartons for another time)Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -
Spaghetti carbonara? Easy enough to do but still got that slightly decadent feeling..."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0
