Love the idea of the veg chilli. You could buy some tortilla chips and salsa to go with it. Perhaps even give it a mexican theme and get a bottle or two of sol (mexican beer) or tequila!! xMe, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

Oh my goodness, thank you all for your replies!! I was thinking bolognese would be best but then the suggestion of it being awkward to eat and the garlic v snogging issue is also a worry!! I would love to make a lasagne but I never have, what if it went wrong!!0

Go to M&S and buy a din in for two deal and blag it..!Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

lasagne is so simple! can be made in advance and then bunged in the oven once he is here.
1. make a bolognaise like you would usually.
2. get a deep oven proof dish
3. layer bolognaise then cover with sheets of pasta.
4. repeat step 3
5. repeat step 3 so you know have a few layers of bolognaise and a few of pasta
6. final layer of pasta put a bechamel (white) sauce or buy a jar of dolmio white lasagne sauce, over the top and bung in the oven 200 degrees for about half an hour ot 40 mins until the pasta has gone soft.
7. serve with wedges or salad0 -
I am thinking that I may gave lasagne a go, surely that looks quite impressive? I wish I could do the m&s meal but there is no marks here!0

I'd second the lasagne, then you can just buy a mixed leaf salad and bung it on a plate - serve with a glass of wine (or beer if preferred), and some crusty bread if necessary. You can always make a bolognaise sauce without the garlic - quite often I make it without the garlic if we are eating it during the week. If you do the bolognaise with penne pasta, it's not so awkward to eat. I would definitely buy dessert to save time - maybe cheesecake or posh ice cream.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170

its soooooooo easy and always looks impressive when you have company round.
i make mine like that but with turkey mince added and when i have company i use little individual lasagne dishes so that it looks like more work has gone into it and then huge bowl of salad and huge plate of garlic bread in the middle so that people can help themselves.
very little effort needed plus if you make it in advance then the juice from the bolognaise mix soaks into the lasagne sheets meaning slightly less time in the oven.
you can also sprinkle some crisps and grated cheese on top to make a crunchy topping, the crips the flavour doesnt matter as it goes somehow when you cook them.0 -

Yes go with lasagneFollow SeaFarersWife's instructions above. You can even make it in the morning and leave it all day - and for future reference, you can make it a day or two before and its even better
For the topping, finish with cheese/white sauce, a handful of grated cheese then sprinkle dried herbs, pinch of salt, pepper and a few shakes of paprika for the scrummiest looking topping ever
Do come back and tell us how you got on won't you0
