  • I use 1 litr milk, plastic bottles. Just the right amount for a meal and saves space in the freezer. Easy to take out in morning to take to work,

I would freeze it in the tupperware or whatever, take it out of the box once it's frozen and then put it in a bag - easier to get out of the bag that way. I freeze soup in mugs then do this so I have frozen cuppasoup portions for lunches ;)

I am pulling my hair out because I used all my cheap packable tubs for soup, chilli etc etc.... I never thought about getting it out and then bagging it to make room!!! You are a lifesaver!

They will all be in nice shapes too!!!

Wonder if I can take pies out of pie dishes ?!?!?!?!

C an't see why not if you have it lined properly . Am trying to think of the logistics of that one.

My frozen food are like little bricks. I started out diong them all shapes but it didn't fit and wasted space. It became quite an obsession :p

Here's pics i prviously took - you can see my chubby thumb in this one :o and another pic here

I also write silly things on them to amuse myself when i take them out. Maybe that's just me :p

Edit - forgot the blimmin thread link!

  • Ha ha, not at all!

I buy a ham hock, cover in cold water and bring to the boil. Let it simmer then for 45 mins. Then i throw in a couple of chopped onions/leeks, 4-6 carrots, and loads of lentils . Sometimes i add turnip or courgettes, it just depends what I have in. Then i let it simmer for two hours. I usually add potatoes chopped too. Halfway through the two hours, i take the hock out and pick the meat off. Reserve half (or what ever), throw the chunks back in and the bone to still get more flavour from it.

It's hearty goodness. I also throw some chilli flakes in but then I usually put chilli of some sort it most things

I don't know the quantities , i kind of make it up. Add more water if it's too thick, add more lentils and veg if it's too watery. I guess split peas would be nice too

You will find variations of the recipe in this thread - ham hock bargain food :)

  • Line your clip and lock boxes with a sandwich bag and pop the soup in there. Once they are frozen into handy size freezer blocks, slide the bag out leaving your boxes free to use.

You can then put them back in for pack lunches etc and theres no leaks!

I used to do this for individual portions of soup/chilli/stews etc but using a bowl, which meant I just unwrapped it and had exactly the right amount.

    Hope that helps

    Edited to say: Snap Linda!

    awesome

This has developed into such a long thread that I can't remember whether I've already posted this before but we make a lot of home made soup. I've discovered that if we whizz it up with a stick blender so that it doesn't have any lumps, it freezes beautifully in plastic milk bottles. A one-pint bottle contains an ideal helping for 2 people. Just leave a small space at the top for liquid expansion. You can take it out of the freezer and dump it in a bowl/saucepan of hot water to thaw it through more quickly. I used to store soup in bags but have an old upright freezer with wire shelves and the bags used to get pierced so that when liquid was thawing, it would seep out. Larger amounts of soup can, of course be frozen in bigger sized plastic milk bottles.
