Hi there. Got the recipe for your soup?

Hadn't thought about filling the bags in bowls - usually measure out number of ladels per bag.

put ham shank in large cauldron/pan and cover with cold water, bring to boil, boil shank for 5 mins, chuck the water away. Add fresh boiling water (from kettle) and boil for 30 mins per 1lb plus 30 mins-remove shank from water and chuck in other ingredients, I used 500g bag yellow split peas, about 5 carrots (big ones) and 3 large onions, boil til lentils are soft then whizz with a hand blender- add some chopped ham back in if you like but make sure ham is heated thru in the soup.

p.s. then season to taste, I added salt and garlic powder but you add whatever you want to jazz it up

I have just bought some for 99p (10 of them with lids) these are microwaveable as well and look like the plastic boxes that takeaway food comes in. I also buy foil trays for use in a normal oven - these can be quite cheap too. Try looking in pound shop or similar because those are the sorts of places I go to buy them.

I have even been known to use washed up old ice cream containers - good for freezing but no reheating.
  • One tip I got from Anthea! is for soups that you wish to freeze, sit freezer bag over bowl and pour in your soup tie and freeze -takes up a lot less room than tubs

    Mortgage-free Glee!
If you're planning to reheat in the microwave best steer away from foil containers. I use whatever comes to hand as over the years I've acquired loads of plastic (icecream tubs are useful!). Have also, in emergency, used the casserole I've cooked in, taken out when frozen, (quick rinse under cold tap and irt should slide out) then wrap in foil and bag. Then can just remove the foil and reheat in the original container, which it obviously fits. You do need to label every parcel carefully tho' or you might get a surprise!
    Resolution:

You can pick these up in £1 shops also.
  • ice cream tubs, the tubs from takeaways,
i also put in bowls cover with clingfilm when i cant find tubs.

when i make soup i put it in food bags in portions, also do this with stock.

i also put cooked rice in bags and just microwave when needed.

beemuzed said something very handy, about labeling what goes in the freezer, i nearly put spag bol on the kids pudding plates cause it was in a ice cream tub.

i know our local corner shop gives the tubs they sell the penny sweets away for free. maybe of some use to you my freezer not big enough for them big tubs .

  • Hello All,

Whilst on my very long & sloooooow night shift i had my dinner, about 1am, a weight watchers ready meal (down to 67p @ morrisons so real baragin) it was whuring in the micro & i wa slooking at the box killing time...(are you picturing the scene!)

I thought i pre make meals & freeze them, lasagana, shep pie, curry etc..but always struggle for dishes to use that i wont miss while they are in the frezzer, then i thought, nearly all the plastic/ish trays ready meals come in are also suitable for the oven as you can cook them in there so why not take it home, wash it & reuse it for my own meals, even if to use as a mould to pre freeze before putting it in freezer bag, then it can always be used to cook in the oven also..

Saves buying them..is this a daft idea! i know its tight but im dead please with my idea! Im really trying this year & i feel im getting somewhere!!

sorry if this has already been mentioned on her!

I don't see why this wouldn't work provided you seal the freezer bag well.
Margarine/butter tubs work really well for portions of soup too.;)
