I did try that - but after 5 minutes gave up and bought some of those "tub-its" from MrT ;)

I can confirm that this works. I had to do it when I put my last batch of Chilli Con Carne into 2 tubs, had second thoughts and decided to make it last for 3 servings, and then had to saw one-third off each block. The tubs are exactly 150mm (6 inches) long, BTW.

What kind of a sad, anally-retentive geeky control freak are you??

Everybody knows that 6 inches is 152.4mm :rotfl:

Try your local chinese/indian shops for containers. They usually sell them in decent quantities, and at a decent price.
Another thought, which I know isn't directly addressing your freezer container question~ I ran out of space in freezer, and actually bottled my home made pasta sauces. Works out much more convienent than freezing. I reuse any jars that have had jams, pickles etc in ~ and cadged a few at times.

I know this may seem a ridiculous question but I want to make up some meals for the freezer. My problem is that if I make a shepherds pie for example I put it in a pyrex dish. Can this go in the freezer? Should I be buying some other types of containers?

Pyrex can go in the freezer. The problem is that your dish is then tied up until you use that item.
  • I read ages ago that if you put a double lining of foil in your dish, higher than your stew, or whatever you have cooked, then put in the freezer and let it freeze completely, you should then be able to lift it out, putting foil on the top too, and your pyrex dish is then free to use again.

Or you could invest in some dishes that can be frozen, microwaved, or just used as they are for packed lunches or storing things in the fridge. I got some from Lakeland, I think they were about £6.99 for 10. HTH.

that is exactly what i have just done - made a huge batch of chicken (leftover from lunch) and mushroom pasta bake; lined a few containers with foil, and are in freezer now. Tomorrow (if i remember) i will lift the foil 'containers' out and regain my normal ones. Just remember though, when defrosting, will need to put the foil wrapped item in a suitable container!

I bought 2 pyrex dishes a few weeks ago then when I got home and read the label, it said do not use in the oven!!! How crazy is that.

I put shepherd's pie etc in lock & lock containers in the freezer.
