Try the empty linings from cereal cartons ( I make bulk lots of tomato sauce, etc, freeze in pyrex dishes then transfer to the cereal bags to free up the dishes. Also when ready to defrost they can be decanted back into the pyrex and fit perfectly). I haven't had any problems at all with bags bursting etc in freezer.

Takeaway containers. Pack of 10 from Asda for less than a quid. And of course, the actual ones I get when I treat myself to a chinese :)

I thinking about cooking in batches and freezing to save money and was wondering what you all freeze your food in?

I thinking of doing mainly potatoe dishes like cottage pie etc. Do I freeze the in the same pot i'm going to heat the in the oven in??? Also where can i get something to freeze it in cheap?

    Thanks

I reuse plastic tubs mainly, with cottage pie I tend to use the dish it will be reheated in if possible. Saying that I have started just freezing the meat and sauce and doing the potato at a later time when I cook it then what is in the freezer is more versatile. With the likes of bolognese, soups, mince in gravy, stews etc I put a freezer bag inside the tub, fill it, then when it's frozen pop it out of the tub so I don't have too many tubs :) Saves money and space in cupboard when not being used and freezer.

  • I bought 4 decent sized freezer boxes from Woolies the other day for £2 in the sale.
When we have finished eating the four tubs of ice cream I bought for a treat over Christmas these will be used too.

I've been using plastic tubs too, the cheapest I found were 6 little ones like you'd get your takeway in for 99p in poundstretcher.

Yeah Icecream, marg etc tubs are great, I tend to get them from people who work on deli counters aswell :)

The ones I did buy which are great are from £1 shop, plastic with lids same as the takeaways use 10 for £1. (Don't get takeaways much now so had ran out)Stack well and ideal as full meal for one or enough bolognese sauce etc for 2. I just pull one out like a ready meal and defrost for me when DP is working (pasta bolognese on bench now) and pop in microwave. Definately my best buy so far!

I use take away type containers - the plastic ones - not too keen on the foil ones, as you can't reuse the lids.
When I want to defrost, I turn container upside down under running warm water for a couple of minutes, and then put into glass or metal container to reheat in oven if its something I want to have the crispy finish - pies etc. If not microwave to defrost in the container.
If you go to your local indian, or chinese shop, you can buy the containers that the take aways put your food in - a lot cheaper than the supermarkets.
I make sauces for pasta, and put that in the plastic zip lock type bags, leave a small gap when you close the top, and suck the air out to flatten them.
