I used to work as a welfare rights adviser (before I started my nurse training) and people would come up to me and ask me how I could work getting all these "blaggers" money.
I really feel that people who are so judgemental dont have a clue about illness and disability and how it effects peoples lives. They read something in a paper like a family living on a thousand pounds a week and believe it. Honestly.....
I couldnt live on the pennies you get on benefit and I think 98% of people would prefer to be able to work and earn a proper wage (and all the other beneefits that work gives, a structure to your day, social network, a status etc). Some poeple just cant manage this and that is why there is a suport system in place. One day you might need to acess that support and I hope when you do you wont have to put up with all the acusations of blagging that go on.
Just remember illness and disability can be more than physical.
thank you for saying this!
some peopel dont understand much about mental illnesses and they say that you are making it up for attention or cash.
i have a mangement diploma and good A-levels, i could earn so much more than the IB i get!
i also go to uni one day a week (gov scheme for peopel on benefits) and so far im getting high 2:1's and firsts (i did my 1st year full time before i got ill) some people ask me if i can do one day a week at uni why cant i have a full time job? teh stress would un-do all of the hard work ive alredy done to get myself better and im even aiming to go full-time and be off benefits by 3rd year in october but i cant say fro definate.
i will always have OCD and peopel say things like "oh your flat must be really clean" or "ima bit like that with public loos" whcih are insensitive and ignorant.
i wish more peopel understood. when im a bit better id liek to do an interview in one of teh womens magazines or on day time telly or something becuase at teh moment saying "i have a meantal illness" you might as well say "i am a peodophile" you get teh same reaction.

As a mum of 2 kids with disabilities which are 'invisible' in some ways to the naked eye I know where freebie junkie is coming from.My son with the physical disabilty when clothed doesn't stand out much..take away the layers and his poor little bod is twisted beyond belief.Youngest looks 'normal' but is autistic amongst many other things but catch him on a rare quiet moment and he looks like a normal child its just when he starts screaming and stimming and sits in the road (I could go on for days)...But I also live in the 'inner city' and do understand where ianian is coming from also,I see it here sadly on an all too regular basis.People often start off on income support etc, then they move onto the disabilty benefits the most common here again is depression and alcoholism.Again I am not judging any people I don't know personally, these 3 individuals are people who openly admit to scamming the system. They have been reported, one has been caught and two others are under investigation. These are the sort of people who do make things so hard for genuine claimants and the press do not help by sensationalising it all.Sadly the people who are in most need will continue to suffer lack of services and financial help because of the people like this.I personally think when they are caught they should be shown pictures and stories about how some people adults and children, are without essential help due to their greed.0

its all about realising the dirrerence between the 'real' and 'fake'. alcoholics are ill but they need to be trested not left to drink themselves to death, like genuine depressives, etc. etc.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0

to dob somebody in you have to be medically qualified, just because you see somebody washing there car does not mean they are fit for work, dobber's should have to give there name and be fined if they get it wrong.
And as for sitting at a computer for hours on end,i myself am in great pain sitting on a chair for just a hour, but i just have to get on with it like most sick people do.
Do you really think employers really want to employ people who are sick, and who give 100%just to get through one day.I dont think so.
This witch hunt of the sick is all about money and nothing else, and will damage the country in the long run,and what a terrorable way to treat ex miners, steelworkers seamen, ship builders, fishermen most of whom worked in conditions we could never imagin.surly these people are worth £60 per week.
Or is this country now full of selfish, ungrateful , unfeeling, socialy unaware right wing ,yank loving peopleChild of a Fighting Race.0 -
but the witch hunt is not aimed at the sick but the people claiming sick when they are fit to work. But alas as i said the people that will get targeted are the legit people as they will tend to go along with what the ba say to them whereas the BLAGGERS will argue the toss and refiuse and go mental so the ba staff dont want the greif so the will go for the easy option.
As for people sitting on computers all day - my point is If you can sit on a pc all day at home why can't you sit on a pc all day at work? you yourself cannot do that as you are in pain after an hour but other people are sitting on their pc all day AND going round the shops all day picking up bargains, buying and selling on ebay etc etc etc. There are a hundred jobs people like this can do WITHOUT TOUCHING ANYTHING either. Also why should someone like this get more money than someone on JSA and actively seeking work?0 -
what job could i do without touching anything which might trigger my obsessions, plus not too much stress as that makes them worse, plus flexible with me if im late as sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 hours to get ready? id love it.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0

i was just wondering if by 'people like this' you meant me, were you refering to my joke about not being able to touch anything? i can touch soem things, but it depends wether i know whose touched them before or not. like i can touch my computer keyboard as only me and my bloke has touched it but i cant use teh ones in teh library as i dunno whose touched tehm and they might have MRSA or something. i also dont touch public door handles, things taht have touched teh floor outside of my flat (or other shoe-free places), second-hand items of any sort, anyone or anything thats touched a baby, dirty-looking money, dirty-looking people, people with jobs taht put tehm near germs (nurses, cleaners etc.), used cleaning items other than those in my flat (and then i have to bathe after i clean something), bins, etc...
if you did mean me- is that becuase you dont understand OCD or because you think im a 'blagger' as you put it, because really i ahve qualificatioons and experience that could get me so much more money that bloody IB!:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0 -
people have to get to work first,we dont all live in soap land where everthing is across the road.
i will concide if you live in a big city,it MAY be easier to do a days work than if you live in,say for instance Norfolk for some people.
for me personaly my nearest bus stop is over a mile away.Child of a Fighting Race.0
