errrrrm ok
your car has 2 radiators , one at the front of the car and one inside the car , coolant ( not just water , that can freeze so do use antifreeze ) circulates around the car and engine , theres also a thermostat which is there to alter the flow , behind the internal rad is a small fan which is where your heat comes from , the switch simply makes the fan go slower or faster , the fan is elec
so you need to work out whats going wrong here , if the fan can be heard then its not an electrical fault , if the fan can be heard but its not blowing warm then its either the flap to change it from cold to warm isnt working or theres a fluid circulation problem
if a car is very low on fluids it may not have enough coolant to circulate inside the car , if you get to this point you would already be giving the car a fast death and this would be beyond stupid , its a duty of care to check fluids , low fluids wouldnt take out the head gasket , the overheating from being dumb enough to drive around without checking once in a while will warp the head due to excess heat , if anyone does this then no sympathy , if the thermostat has failed then heat may not get through to the internal rad ( heater matrix )
other than this and chances are its an elec problem , check your fuses , if you dont have a handbook then look at the panel which will show the fuse as a fan , check all just in case , as has been mentioned it could also be a relay or the heater switch , a garage will sort this out with minimal costs0
