My car heating has packed up!!

I drive a Ford Focus and the heater has packed up. I am broke at the moment so a trip to the auto electrician is out of the question. I've coped without the heater and fan reasonably well - putting a coat and gloves on before getting into the car - but with this cold snap its starting to get dangerous.

For a start I can't keep the windows de-misted - driving with the window down a bit improves it but its not ideal but the main problem is that the inside of the windscreen is iced up. Used deicer and a scraper but it keeps icing up.

Anyone with any ideas on what to do until I can afford the trip to the garage? Anyone else had this problem and can tell me how much it cost them to have fixed?

Which bit doesn't work?
Is it the fan?
Or does it just not get warm?

has it broke all together - ie no fan not even on number 4 setting?

Does the blower work on any speed? Often it's just the lower speeds 1-3 that don't work due the resistor block failing. Get it fixed ASAP because an accident would cost more and have added inconvenience!

Hi Guys

The whole thing has packed up - no blower and no heat no matter what the settings. Internal air circulation button no longer works but the rear de-mister is.

Maybe worth getting a 'Haynes' manual or try to see if the library has a copy unless you are familar with the schematics of the Focus.

Try checking the water level in your radiator. My heater stopped working because of this Don't know why but when I put water in the heater started working again!

There are any one of a number of reasons why the fan could stop working, but the simplest ones are the most likely. If a fuse has gone, they're only a few pounds to replace and very straightforward.

At the other end of the scale is the possibility that the blower motor has packed up, which could cost £300+ to replace and repair. How old is your car and how many miles has it done?

It depends how technically-minded you are but as someone has already mentioned, spending £10 on a secondhand Haynes manual that will help you with basic repairs and service checks will help you save loads of money on your car and help you identify any problems early on.
