  • A very bad tackle.....

  • quick question...what version of windows are you running? XP? 98? Me? 95? 2000?
(I'm guessing its not vista on a 320MB ram machine.)
If its Me, 98 or 95 it would explain a few things regarding the lack of firefox install.

Personally I would recommend backing up all your stuff and reinstalling windows and install anti virus and anti malware ( Spybot S&D is one of my faves due to in built browser "vaccination", there is another option though

If you just use the laptop for websurfing, listening to music and office type work, then it might be worth considering a linux distro such as Ubuntu (not for everyone I know) wife is totally non techie, easy as pie to install, she loves it, says way faster than windows, no anti virus needed, no malware and no nannying pop ups (like windows did, she got sick of it asking her to reboot every 2 minutes when she was trying to work)

Personally from the sounds of the laptop I would recommend Xubuntu (spin off of Ubuntu) which uses a desktop with low requirements which should make your laptop experience speedy. Its also free. Also installed ubuntu on my very very non IT literate cousin's laptop, no support calls yet from her and that has been.....almost a year now. So I think Ubuntu has come on leaps and bounds in the last 2 years compared especially to 5 years ago.

Download the liveCD from https://www.ubuntu.com, it allows you to have a play around with ubuntu without having to install it (not as fast as running from hard drive, but usuable)

Only prob I have now is my wife steals my dual boot desktop to play games..oh well can't win them all.

Its max capacity is 512mb and currently has 320mb.
The display is not showing well, like google I can't see the logo and some other pages with pics and I cant install avast because the page closes everytime I tried.

You really need more memory mate

As Browntoa said ~ 1 gig would be a HUGH boost to your system

  • Thanks Scot and Alienrik, the laptop is actually about 8ys old and I dont want to messup with it by ading some OS on it cos its now very fragile.I just need to add another 256mb to make it to the maximum 512mb ram it is allowed to take as advised by crucial.

The issue I have now is as soon as I type avast or hijackthis onto google and click search,it goes off.It wasnt like this before the infesction.Does this mean I still have some malware on it?I ran bam again but came with no infection.

    What the way forward Browntoa?

I think you already do have 0.5 Gig
if you dont have a graphics card, then the pc will use some of the computers onboard RAM to use as graphics
    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Open it up. At the top it should tell you the version number, then the service pack.
Can you tell me the service pack and all the info underneath please? (cpu, ram and graphcs card)
And dont take crucials advice as gospel as they can easily get maximums wrong (And sometimes even the type of memory)

  • I have downloaded ccleaner but its a little tricky as you dont want to delete what you might need later.

Its XP pro SP2,Mobile AMD Athlon XP 1600+,319mb RAM, ATI RAGE mobility.

  • I got these msg while searching other forums but I dont have the TDSServ on my xp.
    • Click on Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc and click OK
    • On the View menu click on Show hidden devices
    • Browse to Non-Plug and Play Drivers and you should see something like TDSSserv.sys
    • Highlight that driver and right click on it and select DISABLE
    • Now RESTART your computer.
    • Re-Download a copy of Malwarebytes from that link I gave you earlier but DO NOT run it yet.
    • Rename it as I suggested before
    • Once the program is installed go to the UPDATE tab and try to update the program if you can.
    Hope this works!
