lovethymini - have you got the keyrings yet and are they good? That might be a good idea for my mum, but I'm worried the pictures are really tiny. Are they big enough to show photos OK?

I've got my mum a book but I'd like to get her something else as well.

Sorry Seawyn only just spotted your question!

I bought them from Play.com, they're made by Sovos. Image size is about 1.5" so not big enough for photo of a group as faces would be too small, but good for close ups of cute baby, or handsome husband holding cute baby :-)

I can't believe I forgot to say this earlier but I just remembered that I'm a mum, :o and I'd like a wok with a lid on it, the latest Twilight book, and a box of plain chocs from Thorntons. (but not too big cos I will eat them all!)

Some luxurious L'Occitane smellies that I can't afford to buy for myself would be fab too.

Some tickets to see a band far enough in the future to look forward too would be an amazing present.

And one of those two or three tier cake stands would be lovely as well. (I could have the girls round for a posh tea!)

Some kind of voucher for a family day out would be awesome too as we don't do that enough due to financial contraints.

I'm also into sorting out and framing family photos at the moment so some nice picture frames wouldn't go amiss either.

Or if you reeeeeaaaalllllly love me ;):D - a Wii Fit!

    :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Love Jacks xxx

PS Did you notice how I started off quite modestly and then my demands got bigger and bigger? :rotfl: :p :rotfl: :p :rotfl: *hangs greedy head in shame*:D

I bought my Mum the Ashes to Ashes dvd set, it's what she wanted.
As an extra surprise, I have also ordered a spider plant from a garden supply company in Holland!
She has wanted a spider plant for AGES but none of the garden centres seem to have any. After a good scout online (via Quidco) I found this dutch nursery with one in stock ready to deliver.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

Probably a bit late now and I think it's already been mentioned but I have got my MIL a subscription to Yours magazine. I get given lots of magazines which I pass on to her and this one she proclaimed as "excellent-just excellent" so as I no longer receive that one second-hand I bought her a subscription this year, plus Thornton's Classic collection and a cross-word book too. Would like to get her more, wouldn't be possible to buy enough, she is a lovely woman and has been more of a mum to me in the last six years than my mum ever was! Don't see enough of her either as she lives over 2 hours away. x
  • My mum is sadly no longer with us but I always thought to myself "if I was her age what would I really like" - slippers, diaries, chocolates etc etc? Where is the imagination in that - plumping for something safe.

How about ballooning, or a train ticket for a day out instead of using her bus pass, tickets to the nearest theatre/cinema perhaps - something that broadens her horizons and make it a day out she can share with you, not in isolation.

You know your own mother - have a think.

I've just bought my Mum a subscription to Saga magazine. Got it from iSubscribe and paid £15.95 for an annual direct debit for 12 issues, which is a huge saving on normal price. There was a free gift of a box of Thornton's chocolates which I thought would go to her but were sent to me - bonus! :T

  • I got mine:
    • Chocolate from Boots which came in a nice blue and white china box. My dad will eat the choccies and she will like the box! 3 for 2 - it was the free one
    • A book (I forget which one) which came with the Times £2.99 book offer that I thought she would find interesting
    • A leather photo-frame (£3 in WH Smith sale) with a picture of my dad dressed as Santa in it :rotfl: I know she will like that as I bought the same photo frame and she commented on how nice it was :D
I know that some will think I'm being cheap with my mother for not spending a lot, but I have had my first Christmas in about 5 years without resorting to credit, and I want to know that I didn't get in (more) debt for anyone's presents.
Good for you! We are already talking about scaling back next year. Cost £46 in parcel and card postage so far this year!! Was so proud at the bargains we had bagged too! Going to get more inventive throughout next year.
Cheap and cheerful. Preferably free. :T LBM - more a gradual rude awakening.

I've bought my mum a journal which has pre-printed questions on pages for her to answer (if she wants to), the sort of questions you don't necessarily think to ask: describe some of your favourite outfits you wore as a young woman, describe the occasion you first met my dad's parents, what do you still want to achieve in your life, etc. It's a nice looking hardback journal that cost me about £12 in a bookshop, but I think you can get it online from www.fromyoutome.com and there are others to choose from, not just for mums.
Always worth posing a question. My late great aunt had apparently always wanted to experience a helicopter flight - this only came out at a very advanced age when the RAF rescue helicopter was utilised to transfer her to another hospital!! There would have been great joy in organising a pleasure flight for her if only this had been known.

Bought Mum set of One Touch can and bottle/jar opener - broke her arm earlier in the year and she is still struggling to get strength back. Plus she is not getting any younger anyway. Bought MIL novelty hot water bottles and hand warmers as really worried about her feeling the cold. Also bought both some nice smellies (making MILs into a gift box with towels similar to a M&S set but fraction of the price - bought towels and toiletries in M&S sale and using fancy box I received a gift in last year). And MIL also getting book on Henry VIII ref. series she enjoyed on TV.
