    Hi keely,

Good luck with keeping your new years resolutions. It sounds like you are managing a lot of Old Style things already. For more ideas on moneysaving Old Style have a look around the board but don't take on too much at once. As some Old Stylers say 'baby steps' is the best way to make changes.

This thread is a good place to start looking for ideas:

Welcome to Old Style - (BRAND NEW "Read me first")

As we have a New Year's resolutions thread for 2009 I'll add your thread to it to keep everyone's resolutions together.

Thanks pw, sorry I missed this thread or I'd have added to it instead of starting a new one. I am a "lurker" of the boards so I have picked up a lot, I guess there is always room for improvement though!

  • Hi

Can I jump in here?? I know its a day late but things have been a bit mental in my house as STBX (soon to be ex) moved out yesterday after 14 years of marriage. (but thats a different story) So my resolutions are

    1) Get grocery spend below £300 for 1A 3 CH
    2) Meal plan
    3) Loose weight
    4) Get better at House work ( not my strongest point a the best of times but now have to juggle fulltime job and house work and kids - have been dipping into fly lady thread may have to study in more detail)
    5) Cut time spent reading on here and start doing!! Hours seem to disappear as if by magic
    6) ebay as many old toys/ clothes as possible
    7) try and excercise at least 30 mins aday
    8) generally get organised!!!1

well that seems a huge list but it all has to be done it may take a while to get there but i will try.

    Ooh! What an interesting thread.
    1. Double my veg bed from last year (once I have the next 6 month contract fromthe LL)
    4. EAT the things I grow - and GROW the things I want to eat. Carrots are already in andd I can't wait to start on my leeks and tats Round 2.

    9. Re-order my bedroom and study so that the bedroom is warmer and the study is more usable.

Woohoo - it's only Jan 5th and already I have completed number 9!
It is noticably warmer in both rooms. Although actually the office would be if today hadnt decided to be utterly freezing - it certainly seemed better over the weekend, which wasnt as cold!

As regards 1 and 4, the folks came round on Sunday and we planned out my garden (it VAST, as it is quite an old bungalow that I rent, and they want to use it as a family allotment, which is fine by me as I get extra help then, too!). We worked out what we wanted to grow and then Mum took home the list of what we decided on so that she could order it from her seed catalogues.

    I'm very excited!:T

    In 2009 I'd like to:

Get more organised with regard to meal planning. This week all planned out, and next weeks plan started. I also now have a kitchen diary which should make planning easier.
Inventory my larder, storecupboard and freezer, and take part in the storecupboard challenge regularly Freezer done, already done one storecupboard challenge meal with others to follow.
Resurrect the "Don't throw food away" challenge that was going on earlier in the year - anyone know where the thread has gone? Found the challenge thread - it had been amalgamated with the leftovers thread but at least we have it current again. Lots of interest from people too which is good. :A
Have a go at making birthday / anniversary cards for people - I've always fancied trying it. Two cards made, and this years christmas cards set aside to cut into tags.
Grow more stuff to eat. We have barely any space for this so there are going to be some containers on the go! I have some spuds which have sprouted which I think I'm going to stick in buckets and see what comes up.
Do more home made gifts for christmas next year - the ones we did this year went down SO well! I was really proud!
Make gifts rather than buying when we go to visit friends for dinner etc.
Have at least one night each week where the TV doesn't go on. Tuesday nights are now "TV free night" in this house - can't BELIEVE I got MrEH to agree to this!
    Continue with decluttering....
Finally finish decorating the spare room - preferably ahead of the planned visit from my friend who helped us start the process about three years ago - that's in late January!

Getting there - once the BBC news finishes I'm going to persuade MrEH that we want to inventory the storecupboard......! ;)

Well done everyone that's started on their resolutions!

i have made all the thank you cards for Christmas with DD so that is something underway!

i have meal planned so far this year (up to today!) need to see what's in the freezer and cupboard to keep it going!

Getting more organised and writing lists in a page a day diary for this year is helping!

Still need to sort through present cupboard and see what can be given to anyone then have to find homes (ebay/friends/charity shops) for things that won't be used!

    Will keep trying xxx

Great thread, I feel really inspired reading everyone's ideas.:T

    My resolutions are:
    1. Do more baking, especially bread.
    2. Keep the house tidier.
    3. Buy (and use!) a Slow Cooker.
    4. Make as many presents as possible for Xmas 2009.
    5. Use my local butcher for meat.
    6. Only buy what I really need, no more "Retail therapy" trips into town.

Just hope I can keep them going, will be good to keep this thread live to keep us all focussed!

    My resolutions are
    • give up my half a teaspoon of sugar in my tea - going well so far
    • be more frugal in general as we are about to extend our cottage and who knows how much it will cost
    • plant some more veg out in the garden as soon as I can get the seeds potted up
    • use the Flylady thread for cleaning motivation
    • be more organised in the evenings as little one starts kindergarten in April so will need to be better prepared for the early mornings
    • listen to my hubby more
    • use my slow cooker that I got for Xmas
    • Spend time with my elderly grannys as I don't think they will be here for much longer
    Thats all folks

  • I've been keeping a money planner on an excel spreadsheet for a few years now and I have it extended until 2020. I have credit card debts of £19k which I have arrangements for so no interest is being paid. I also need to clear an o/d of £300.

    My resolutions are as follows:

1 Clear OD by May 2008
2 Dig over garden and start planting veggies as soon as the ground thaws
3 Have already sorted my freezers and found loads of forgotten food which I am working my way through.
4 Find the cheapest deals for all utilities by the end of January.
5 Earn a few extra pounds by knitting for friends or have a bootfair at which point I can get rid of some lovely dresses I have but don't fit me any more.
6 Lose 1 stone in weight (the gardening will probably help this)
7 Keep fuel costs to a minimum by using my open fire and keeping the heating off. Already collecting newspapers and making fire logs.
8 Have already started to clean with white vinegar and have a sample of soap nuts on the way to me.
9 Have £1k saved by the end of the year so I don't need to use credit cards or OD for emergencies.
10 Use car only when necessary. Have a rail card as I commute and I will use that if I can. Will only use car to do bulk shopping as cheapest shop is not near a station.

Seems a lot but pretty sure its all achievable.
