How very sad for you & your cats.

I know how frustrating they can be but that's the nature of cats as I'm sure you will know & I suspect you are just having a bad day.

Not easy - but can you try to keep them restricted to one room only -especially when you are out - that way you limit the problem/smell. Also more litter boxes.

The cat with thyroid problems - our cat had one of her thyroids removed & has been much better since (& less costly - no tablets)

Can the vet offer any solution to the soiling problems?

The OP hasn't asked for advice or help, she's already 'tried everything' and is now waiting for them to die.

It's hardly comparable with an owner at their wits end asking for assistance.

I can understand where she is coming from and I am an animal lover ,it can be very frustrating and sometimes you need to let off steam which I think is what this person is doing ,but where do you draw the line and if you have really tried everything what are you supposed to do ,put up with a house that no one wants to enter ,where you can not sit and enjoy it ,where you are embarrassed to have people visit .
I used to be a member of the cats protection league and the leader of our team lived in awful conditions because of the cats the house was very smelly the cats went anywhere they wanted to ,cat poo in the bath weeing on the beds it was terrible how on earth she coped I do not know .I for one would be unwilling to put up with a cat that went anywhere it wanted and made my home a place I was ashamed of, there comes a time when you have to draw a line and say enough is enough and make other arrangments for the animals weather it is a heated out door home or a visit to the vet .

I guess this will be a bit controversial but I can't wait for my cats to die, just so that I can have my home back...

...I really love the nature of cats, but have vowed never to have another after my last two go. I can't wait to have a house I don't feel embarrassed to invite people round to.

Unfortunately, caring for a dog or cat includes looking after them when they are old & have health problems, and yes, this can be expensive and messy.

I have cared for several elderly incontinent rescued dogs over the years and (much as it is hard work) I would never have wished them an early death!!

Old & sick animals dont ask to become sick & ill so its seems a bit mean to resent them so much & wish them dead?

I'm glad you have decided not to have any more cats after your present 2 have passed away as I'm sure animals pick up on any resentment towards them.

I'm lucky that my friends and family visiting my house are also animal lovers, so they wouldn't be offended by any pet "smells"... though having said that, my house has never smelled as I have always managed to keep it clean. Maybe thats easier with dogs than cats?

Maybe your hyperthyroid cat needs a vet checkup if she smells that bad? If she is elderly she may have difficulty grooming herself or she may need dental work?

Felt awful saying that I wished my cats dead. I was really p***d off with them at the time as one had just wee'd on the kitchen floor again, despite having a clean litter tray.

I have edited my original post.

I don't have time to reply to everyone's comments at the moment but will come back on later.

I understand how you feel, sometimes our pets behaviour does get us down and annoys us but if you want to be a pet owner you have to take the good with the bad and accept their little faults. We all need to let our frustrations out and it is alright to complain and tear your hair out, it's only natural and it's refreshing to know that even though you dislike the cats sometimes you do love them, thats what is more important and at least you are very honest about it.

Some people would have dumped the cats by now so well done you for sticking it out.
  • I always think of my cats as the equivilent of a toddler. They have no idea that what they're doing is wrong you have to be patient with them and take the rough with the smooth. At the moment my kitten likes nothing better then to climb the curtains, i'm okay with it as i know that that is what kittens do. As to my scratched furniture my boy cat does it and no matter how many times i put him on the scratching mat and post he doesn't want to know, i'm fine with it - rough with the smooth lol.

I've had cats all my life and had to nurse my boy cat back to life last year, he was at deaths door and the vet told me he had more chance of living if i nursed him every 15 minutes for 3 days which i gladly did, with no sleep. I took them on from the rescue home and they are my responsibility no matter what they do.

I will be honest and say that your post did upset me even though you've edited it as a pet is for life not just when they're cute and not an inconvience.

Have you taken your cats to the vet to see if they can help? My old boy cat started spraying everywhere and the vet was very helpful and suggested lots of things we could do to stop him. Unfortuantely it was years ago and i can't remember them now (sorry) but for your cat's sake and sanity please seek professional advice.

my carpet in my hall is covered in stains from when my little girl was sick with cancer. i am saving up for a wooden floor now. i still have two cats (old boys) and i have learnt that old cats / ill cats and carpets don't mix! (especially when the carpet is light oatmeal in colour!).
  • My old dog develped diabetes and occasionally would get a water infection (like cystitis) and struggle to hold her pee.

This was very distressing, but only because i could see how upset she was about it, having always been a clean dog.

Carpet is carpet at the end of the day, I wont lie on my deathbed regretting not having had the cleanest carpet, however, I will always be glad I had my dog, and will always miss her.

She gave far more to me than I ever did to her.

First of all, I'd like to apologise for my insensitive post last night. I'm sorry to all those I offended.

I have felt so guilty today that my girls don't understand what's going on. They have had extra treats today and are now sitting one either side of me looking at me adoringly and purring loudly, oblivious of what I have said about them.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have to remember that they need a little extra attention now they are getting on a bit.

I will definitely put another litter tray around, though have to get another covered one as DC2 forgets to squat so it just goes over the edge. She has always been a bit skittish so is kind of ready to run whatever she is doing.

Our house is open plan. We got rid of all the doors downstairs when we moved in - 10 years ago - they were really old fashioned and we thought it was pretty cool at the time. Great for all those parties we were going to have. We had one when we moved in and that was the last one!

We want to get some doors put in between the lounge and front door/stairway/landing so that we can close off downstairs if we need to, and get carpets put in hall and landing, and then have the bedroom doors open, as we currently keep them closed because of the wee accidents. We are saving up to get a conservatory with cat flap to outdoors, which we could restrict the cats to when we are out.

DC1 has an appointment for her thyroid check after Christmas and I will ask about dental work, though the vet said that her teeth weren't too bad considering her age. She has always been on Hills dried food until very recently, as she doesn't seem to be able to digest it now, so I have switched to wet food.

I'm not particularly houseproud but my main thing is that I don't want people to think that the house smells. No-one has ever mentioned anything before, but my parents came over today and said they thought I must have found the problem area as they couldn't smell anything today! I think that's a back handed compliment isn't it?

Contrary to what I insinuated in my previous post, I do not want them to die. I certainly would not do anything to make them go any quicker, no rocks in sacks! They will be looked after and kept comfortable until the time comes.

DC1 is on the arm of the sofa reaching out her paw on to the keyboard, it's as if she wants to type something herself! What do you think she is trying to say? I think I'm opening up the flood gates again!
