What would you prefer banks to address you as?

  • Sir or Mr "Surname". It annoys me no end when someone I don't know and never met uses my Christian name. Some ask first what my preference is - top marks to them for simple good manners.
At least I've yet to be addressed as "mate"!
  • I'm 39 (well, for a few more days anyway), and I don't mind being called my by first name, as long as it's the short version, and "Miss" is fine too, and shows respect.

As I get older, I get "Mrs" quite a lot, which I usually correct; what I really hate is being called "Ms". In my view I've earned the right to be called "Miss", so please do it!

I am not really fussed whether someone asks to speak to Mrs W or Julia W, if they just ask to speak to Julia in the first instance I think that's a bit over familiar and I particularly hate people who keep using your name over and over again in a call.
From the other side having worked in a bank call centre I would always call customer Mrs or Mrs or Sir or Madam. I gave them my first name. Quite often, though, customers I had never met would call me "Ju" then for an entire call. It's common here to shorten down names to one syllable and fine if friends do it but weird in a business context.
  • i prefer first name. mr .... sounds old . i was once addressed as buddy boy by a man with a cheap suit and a silly haircut in fones4u which was a bit to familiar.

    Your magnificence?

I dont really have conversations with banks. I do most of it on line.

However if i do have interactions i expect it to be Mr <insert my name>

I also dont expect them to offer me a free financial review or to try to advise me or sell me crap.

  • In a bank or building society I would expect to be addressed as Mr.Crown. I consider it rather ill mannered for some one to address a stranger by their first name. If they politely ask if they may call me by my first name, then that's a different matter altogether.

I hate being called 'Mr' - in any situation. What does that all about? It is a meaningless label. My firstname is 'Phillip' and that's what I like to be called. I don't like people to be presumptuous by calling me 'Phil' as if they've known me for years.

I hate 'Aunt' and 'Uncle' for example, though Mun, Dad or Grandad are OK. As a teacher I have had many an argument with colleagues about children and the use of firstnames with teachers. Our school does not do this so I go along with the norm which is 'Sir' or 'Mr xxxxx'. People somehow think using the label Mr, or Uncle or Aunt conveys respect - as if respect is gained through using a label.
