Only 2 of us at home now. I do lots of preparation in advance, usually make stuffing and prepare veg when Nine Lessons and Carols on radio at 3pm on Christmas Eve. Turkey in early on Christmas morning. Back to bed, then OH makes a good breakfast (in bed!) about 9ish.

I write myself a timetable for when things need to go on, set a timer and float in and out of kitchen as needed. I set the table early. DDs and families come about 12 o'clock. Champagne all round. Grandchildren have a snacky lunch early to keep them going and then we all sit down for our Christmas dinner between 3 and 4pm.

DDs help with serving up, OH carves, opens wine etc. We only have 2 (huge!) courses, everything in serving dishes. When I sit down for lunch, that's me done for the day! DD fetches pudding in and serves that. Other DD helps her dad to clear up and load dishwasher.

Presents after dinner (only children this year) then playing, chatting etc. If hungry DDs make some sandwiches later with pickles and crisps. Occasionally watch a TV special later but not much worth watching in recent years.

    Lovely, lovely day!

OP why would you have to start cooking at 6am???
phil Vickery on this Morning has a method of doing the turkey in 2hrs 40 mins.
We have a proper sunday roast every week and i don't get freaked out by xmas dinner by just seeing it as a slightly more elaborate roast dinner. I do like to be done by the time the queen's speech is on so i suppose start at 1 ish, mind you we cant have it much later mum is diabetic and the kids would be hungry no matter how much chocolate they have had!

  • We always head back through to the family home that my sister has kept going once mum and dad had past on. Its always been the same every year we have our soup around 1pm and then dinner at 3pm, then time to chill and have fun playing the usual mad christmas games with all the family around.

Have a great Christmas everyone x

  • We will probably aim to eat about 1.30, then we will have plenty of time to play games etc and have cold meat and pickles for supper around 8.30 pm or when everyone is hungry. I think this is the best part of Christmas day, I love the cold meat and pickles!
  • We eat at about 12pm - 1pm.

We are early risers (i usually "accidently" wake the kids up at about 4am) so are hungry by then!

Plus my 2 eldest children go to my ex house (their dad) in the afternoon so i like to have Christmas dinner with then before they go.

  • We usually have ours at 2-3pm, alex is still young enough that we won't be out of bed until 9-10am and my oh usually puts the beef in to cook on gas mark 2 overnight so we don't have to rush.
