Im not sure about the legit/illegal status but since i-tunes and others have offered the legal download service the sale of cds has plummeted.
We are a convenience society today and, unfortunately in my eyes, we dont look at the bigger picture. Cheap and now seems to be how it is.
It's unfortunate that you weren't "looking at the bigger picture" yourself, when you opined that those who live in places or in situations where broadband is not actually available to them were the type of people who do not want to "(watch) a lot of films and buys dvds/blu ray etc" (sic).

you'd now be better off living in one.

I prefer to have a proper disc too, I'd only download if Blu-ray or whatever its successor might be disappeared altogetherTraveller1981 wrote: »I prefer to have the physical disc than just a file on my hdd, so will always favour that media. Just hopefully when it becomes a little more affordable.
similarly I'd rather have a CD than download an album, I only use downloads for when I only want one or two tracks
checking back to when I first started buying DVDs, they were costing between £15 & £25 even from the likes of Play & Amazon
I got myself a Blu-ray player recently & the difference in picture quality (on a 1080p telly at least) is outstanding
I've had the same movie (one Blu-ray one DVD) playing simultaneously on my DVD player & my Blu-ray player & switching back & forward between them is like day & night
what I haven't tried yet, is playing the same movie in Blu-ray & DVD on two identical Blu-ray players to check out the DVD upscaling, I'll have the means to try that soon (borrowing a Xmas player) so I might give that a go just out of interest
anyway, I'm sold on it & will be happy with it however long it lasts0 -

What is boring everyone else is wading through your tedious, off-topic "generalizations'' (sic), founded upon simplistic and flawed logic, in their worthy attempt to find reliable information upon the subject of Blu-Ray and whether it is worth investing their own money in this technology when their funds might be tight.

ha ha ha ok, you win, ill stop with the "generalisations" (sic), and once again say that in my humble opinion people would be better off making do with existing dvd format until either the price drastically drops or until something else happens, which personally I think will be a download revolution.
That ok or should I stop posting because your obviously such a genius on all matters technological?!0 -

Well, that's fairly patronising, too. Who are you, or I, to express the view that other people would be "better off making do with existing dvd format" (sic) when nobody has asked us for our opinion (humble, informed or otherwise) on that.
For everyone, it is a qualitative and financial decision, based upon their own eyesight, their own television and their own pocket.
The information that people need - those who prefer to keep films, and such like, in a handy physical form and those who may not even have access to high speed broadband, whether they live in an inner-city tenement block or a £5m house somewhere remote - is whether or not to invest in Blu-Ray or whether, as CoveredInBees wisely pointed out, an alternative physical form of media storage, such as (perhaps) a 32GB USB2 stick, will supplant it soon.
Not everyone wants to settle for inferior picture quality when they've invested in a superior home television, not everyone has access to an internet connection that will deliver them a 16 GB film in 5 minutes and not everyone shares the impassioned and deeply committed belief of at least one person in this forum that people with a netbook want to carry round and attach to it while travelling on the London Underground a portable DVD player (whether that requires the use of two USB2 sockets or only one).
And what's also fairly certainly for sure is that for the quite forseeable future you won't be able to sit in the first class carriage of a British railway train with fifty other people and stream a 3-hour film to your laptop by wi-fi.
What form of physical medium will be used to store HD films at their highest quality in future is what this thread is actually all about - not what will be available, contemporarily, to download online in a compressed form, overnight, ISP willing and speed permitting.

At last back to the original thread and as stated above that will decided the future of Blu-rayWhoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
HD-DVD became so cheap because it also became obsolete. Not really a good time to be investing in it IMHO.
I disagree, but each to their own.
By becoming obsolete, I now have 50 HD movies for considerably less than anyone else will have by owning them on blu-ray. The players were also selling for pennies. As long as the player doesn't break, I am still quids in.

Well that's fair enough.
I own a SACD player, so I know how it feels.

I agree with you Traveller1981, we bought an HD DVD player a couple of months ago for £30 (including 3 movies). Considering DVDs are still being sold and the HD DVD player plays and upscales them it seemed like quite a good deal to me and cheaper than if we'd bought a replacement DVD only upscaler."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
