Blu-ray beware

To me whom watches many films.
I just don,t see the need for Hi deffinition disc's for films. Dvd,s are fine in my living room.
Cinema is the place for best films. "I went through this when buying a cinema system when they first came out" was great at first then was just clutter in the house and ended up selling for £45 cost me £400.
Also I can't recall anyone I know wanting to rush out and buy a blue ray player.
What I think is happening is when we purchase a new tv capable of hd we would generally be sold a blue ray player or have the thought process to buy one as you would have the most up to date equpiment.
Ater all most of us are like sheep "like it or not we are"0 -
Personally, I've not jumped onto the Blueray bandwagon because I would barely see any improvement over the picture quality because of the size of screen I have and the viewing distance, certainly not enough to justify the additional expense in doing so. I'm happy with my upscaled dvds, and I'm still a bargain hunter and most of my dvd purchases are the films I find for less than a fiver.0

In regard to picture quality, * THIS * may assist in the debate between the relative merits of Blu-Ray and upscaled DVDs.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I am never going to argue against blu ray quality versus dvd or streamed content, the simple fact of the matter is that its far superior. Miles ahead even.
I guess its just cost versus convenience at present and I see convenience winning out again.
Not that thats necessarily a good thing. This discussion is pretty much opinions and there cant be a right or wrong just yet.
Isnt there already a superior disk to blu ray over in japan? Im sure ive read snippets about an even better quality disk with more storage being developed.0 -
I personally hope that bluray does follow in the footsteps of HD DVD, as that is when I will buy a blu-ray player and snap up a whole heap of discs like I did with HD DVD. I wouldn't have adopted HD media as soon, had the prices of HD DVD's not dropped to a fiver and under.
I prefer to have the physical disc than just a file on my hdd, so will always favour that media. Just hopefully when it becomes a little more affordable.

It would have made for a more interesting comparison had they dropped a standard DVD player into the mix.Traveller1981 wrote: »I personally hope that bluray does follow in the footsteps of HD DVD, as that is when I will buy a blu-ray player and snap up a whole heap of discs like I did with HD DVD. HD-DVD became so cheap because it also became obsolete. Not really a good time to be investing in it IMHO.0 -
The battle between HD DVD and Blu-Ray turned many off. Now that Blu-Ray has won they didn't do a very good job making the players and discs affordable right off the bat. Prices are coming down now but it might be to late.
I'd much rather watch a normal DVD upscaled for much less cost than a Blu-Ray of the same film.0 -
There is no way on earth Blu-ray is going anywhere. Sony have invested squillions into the technology. Dont forget Sony have 18 million PS3 bluray players worldwide (with many more about to be added to that figure with christmas) before you even start counting the standalone players.
on top of that, you have all PS3 games being produced on Blu-ray discs, most new decent spec PC's have bluray players built in (eventually they all will). Once re-writable blu-rays are reasonably priced they will become as common as DVD-RW are now - with upto 50 gig storage capability on multilayered discs.
I would also add that currently Sony's targets for worldwide standalone bluray players are falling short by just 0.5 million. On a global scale thats nothing. SOURCE.
Bottom line is that this technology is still in its infancy - once the prices start to come down the take up will be massive. DVD went through exactly the same thing.
All IMHO of course!

Right now the format war is Blu Ray Vs DVD.
No doubt Blu Ray is the superior but I doubt it is so much better that people are prepared to shell out the extra cash. The electronics industry has to manufacture a demand for new technologies so that they can cash in on it by getting consumers to bin their current products and replace with newer units.
The problem is(as has been pointed out already) apart from picture quality(which lots of peeps including myself find only slightly different) what is there new?
Without the PS3 Blu Ray would already be dead and unless the costs of the media comes down to be comparable with DVD it will be gone before the end of the recession.0 -
I like to pick up DVDs when visiting other parts of the world, it's the only souvenir of interest to me. Hence I never buy a DVD player that cannot be de-regioned. This is the reason I'll never buy a Blu-ray.0
