You two are so funny! I bet you both pay your debt off a lot quicker than you would have done without this race. Justruth - time to change that signature!! Good luck both of you and have a happy (and cheap) christmas xx

what a great way to motivate yourselves. Keep up all the good work, you'll be flying before long
  • Argh!!!!!! We'll see about that!!!!!

Ah the GF is still being silly, but now I am really beginning to lag, I may just accept the DS and ebay it! If she's dispondant about not getting the x box she can take the DS back. Thats her choice, I made mine! I brought her presents, within the preagreed budget and if she's not happy with that then she wont ever be happy with me!

    Will change signiature now.

I figured that I am spending way too much on travel, and while there are certain journeys and weather conditions where public transport is preferable, uni is 30mins walking distance away, the Chaplaincy allows us to go in and make our own free hot drinks in the day, and I can start doing a proper packed lunch (they also do a free lunch on a Thursday, but as I have been having labs on Thursday mornings, I can't eat until the smell is thoroughly cleared from my hands!) My timetable changes after Christmas so I may be able to make more of this free lunch!

    Hiya justruth,

Just wanted to check if you have your Young Person's Railcard? I'm pretty sure that you're entitled to this as a full-time student no matter how old you are. You can get it free with a Natwest student account (whcih would also give you a much larger overdraft than Halifax, at £1250 in the first year - Halifax are pretty well-known for promoting the large OD but not actually giving it to that many people - up to you though). The snag is that you can only use it after 10am or at the weekend so it probably will be no good to you if your lectures start early - but if you are leaving after 10am then a zones 1-6 travelcard is only £4.80. Just wanted to check that you are aware of that and getting all possible discounts!

    Hi Andromache,

I have young persons railcard and student oyster, the amount is for the monthly zone 1+2 card + the trips out to zone 5, plus a small amount in the budget to come back to my mums every holiday! It is pure lasiness really though. I only live half hour walk away from uni, and I am sure the exercise would do me good as I don't often carry a lot of stuff in with me. The way I have been justifying it to myself is from the work perspective, as 3 nights work counts as 4 days travel, and I have to catch 2 buses home after work. I certainly don't think it worth walking home in the early hours of the morning by myself! However I am considering the benefits of a push bike, i am sure I could probably pick one up for a relatively decent price and make the cash outlay back soon enough.

I have already got the Natwest account and maxed out the O/D as it is 0%! I had been buying teas at uni which I no longer will, I had been quite relaxed about my financial situation as I make all my payments every month without having to think about it too much, however I now would prefer to be debt free! I just have to start paying it off, rather than just servicing it regularly!
