Hi sorry to bump up this thread, I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to grow black eyed beans? Just bought a packet from my local supermarket. If they do sprout are they safe to eat? Guessing that I would have to cook them first?
    Thanks

Ok, I am very interested in getting a sprouter, and would like your opinions. I have seen the Biosnacky one, which looks great, and then also the Geo Sprouter - anyone can share their experiences? Any other suggestions?

I have tried experimenting with the kilner jar, but that didn't work. Will try again using a tray and kitchen paper.

I am having real trouble with beetroot sprouts. I have soaked them for 24 hours, then rinsed them twice daily, and after two weeks three or four have sprouted. What am I doing wrong?

The four I did get were delicious :j. Ditto the more prolific mung beans, alfalfa and fenugreek.

(Mr Proctalgia - good name - but not nice to have! Are you telling us you're a pain in the **** ?!)

Love sprouted seeds of all kinds - almost always have some on the go, with the good old jar method. I agree that mung beans work well, but have not yet tried alfalfa. Tried haricot beans recently, but they were a failure - went smelly before they really did anything.

Thee are plenty of sources that suggest raw kidney beans are toxic. I certainly wouldn't consider sprouting them.

Red kidney beans: Incidents of food poisoning have been reported associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked red kidney beans. Symptoms may develop after eating only four raw beans and include nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain followed by diarrhoea. A naturally occurring haemaglutin is responsible for the illness, but can be destroyed by high temperature cooking, making the beans completely safe to eat. For this reason, kidney beans must not be sprouted. Kidney beans should be soaked for at least 8 hours in enough cold water to keep them covered. After soaking, drain and rinse the beans, discarding the soaking water. Put them into a pan with cold water to cover and bring to the boil. The beans must now boil for 10 minutes to destroy the toxin. After this the beans should be simmered until cooked (approximately 45-60 minutes) and they should have an even creamy texture throughout - if the centre is still hard and white, they require longer cooking.
