Just thought I'd give this a bump as I have recently got into sprouting!! Whilst on holiday in Cornwall and determined not to come home with the usual "pasty belly" I discovered a great shop that sold organic sprouting seeds and also takeaway salad pots with already sprouted beans for on the beach! I brough some back and have just ordered some more - dont know how they compare price wise to others but they are soooooooo tasty.

Thanks I like that website, but how expensive is wheat purchased this way! I buy wheat by the sack for breadmaking so I just whack a few grains on my homemade hi tech sprouter.... its a steamer lol! I wrote a bit about it on my blog if anyone is interested.

I don't have a juicer though so I just chew on the grass!
  • @WELLSIE82 and anyone else - Don't think "sprouts", think veg, greens and salads - that all they are, only better for you. Use them in the same way you would any of the above .....

Love seeing this thread active again , as am always looking for advice and guidance on this topic ..

I find this US site great for advice, not sales, (http://www.sproutpeople.com) though I tend to just sprout beans, seeds etc that I buy from our supermarkets. OK, so maybe they're not perfect, but it must be a big deal healthier eating living sprouts from seeds that I've washed and grown. A lot cheaper too, as I never buy supermarket salads or dips (eg humus)!

Have very basic equipment (approx £10) from another website, that works great for me. I then use the growing advice and recipes from the big sites to max out on nearly-free, healthy food.. . . . and I'm not a veggie, or alternative or hippy (no offence intended to any of those people!!).

There is fantastic window-sill-food that we should grow here in the UK and negates all pesticide-contaminated salad crops ..... How stupid are we???

Go out and buy dried beans (sprout them, don't boil away nature), buy seeds and EAT the plants instead of letting them grow. I feel so good when I do and notice my energy drop when I 'fail' to live up to my health goals.

What do any of us have to lose?? Living Food (real, not the "brand"!) has to be better for us.

They laugh because I'm different; I laugh because they're stupid!! :rotfl:
  • I have been a 'sprouter' for many years and used to have a jar support, which was a bit like a book end in white plastic but it had a curved top and a cutaway at the base to hold the jar at about 45 degrees to drain. Does anyone know where I could get another?

  • Hi, this is my first post. Can I sprout haricot beans from the supermarket?
    Thank you.
    :j
  • My understanding is that if you sprout any kind of large bean, like haricot beans, chick peas, you must cook them once sprouted so that you can digest them, and don't sprout kidney beans because of the toxins. All beans will sprout, as will unprocessed brown rice, because they are all seeds :) By the way, I use a cafetiere to sprout my mung beans - it has a built in mesh for draining and I lay in on the windowsill on it's side. Works a treat! No messing with old tights....
  • Also, just read that large seeds like pumpkin might rot before they get to sprout. Oh, and cooking sprouted beans is great, I made soup tonight and added my sprouted mung beans (bean sprouts) which in fact had leaves as I had them going for a week.....like mini vegetables :) whole lentils sprouted can be then made into daal. Hurrah for sprouts!

    Hi,

A while back I read some threads with interest where folks were sprouting seeds. I've done a search but can't seem to find the thread. I just wondered how you were all getting on and if you are doing well I may take the plunge myself.
