Hi Kittie, I thought it was odd about the airing cupboard bit as well, as most seeds tend to go leggy that way.

Still they are out now, I'm okay with fetching them into the kitchen to wash as I have green fingers and go around checking my seeds each night anyway.

I've been looking at the seed bags - do you think making some out of old pillowcases would work?
Also - maybe a really dumb question - but do I need wheat seeds to grow wheat grass or is there a specific seed called wheatgrass?
    Thanks

First time looking at this thread so please forgive my ignorance....

Where can you get the seeds and beans for sprouting.....can you just use (for example) dried mung beans from a supermarket or do you have the get the garden centre seed packets?
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

I only sprout mung beans, and yes I use the packets from supermarkets ;) I've found that Tesco's mung beans are not as good as Holland and Barrett (or as cheap).

(This is an important step, for if you don't, your sprouts will have only about 1 percent of this vitamin's RDA. Don't expose bean sprouts to sunlight as this will give them an unpleasant bitter taste.)

many thanks for that, it's good to know I didn't imagine it

I grow my mung beans in a transparent container and I *like* the bitter taste! (I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I guess.) I found growning them in the dark made them taste bland! Having said that, I'm just using the sprouts as lettuce-substitute in my sandwiches, maybe it would be too much if I was having a big serving with dinner or something.

Can anybody offer advice on how to clean off the sprouts when they are ready to munch? There are always loads of the hulls / ungerminated seeds, and so on stuck in amongst the sprouts, and soaking them doesn't really clean them off properly.

I harvest my trays, pulling the tallest seedlings out to eat, which normally leaves the hulls behind, but if the hulls are still on the seeds then I eat them too. Ungerminated seeds get chucked out when I rinse out the tray after the last harvest - there aren't many. If you're getting a lot of ungerminated seeds then it can indicate that the seeds you've got are a bit old and you should maybe consider buying some new fresh ones.

It's never occured to me not to eat the hulls  I've never had a problem with ungerminated mung beans from a health food store, but when I started buying them from Tesco I got a lot of hard crunchy beans amongst my sprouts.

Just thought I'd give this a bump as I have recently got into sprouting!! Whilst on holiday in Cornwall and determined not to come home with the usual "pasty belly" I discovered a great shop that sold organic sprouting seeds and also takeaway salad pots with already sprouted beans for on the beach! I brough some back and have just ordered some more - dont know how they compare price wise to others but they are soooooooo tasty.

  • Hi
I've just started sprouting. A couple of batches of alfalfa so far (yum) and some sunflower seeds on the go.

Can someone tell me what type of wheat people have talked about earlier in this thread? The ones that some people say are sweet. Is it the same stuff as wheatgrass seeds? Or is it buckwheat, or what?

    Thanks
  • might be a daft question but ive only ever had these sprouts in stir-frys before. ive read a lot of people say they can be used in sandwiches, what would they go with or would you just put them in on their own? im guessing they might taste a bit bland/ordinary/tasteless without anything else
