The fact is, on average, stores buy items at 33% of the rrp, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

Not sure where you picked this fact up from, but there will be lines that Woolworths sell which have virtually no mark up on and other lines where the mark up will run into thousands of percent.

If woolies were to sell everything off at 90% they would be making even more of a loss. At the moment, to afford the staff and costs they owe, they will need to be scraping back everything they can.

They are in administration, it's about selling the stock of as quickly as possible to reduce cost and for the best possible price to repay as many debts as possible. If they have to sell it at 90% off to shift it, then that's what they have to do, it's better than getting nothing for it.

Why would they sell to us at less then cost price when they can just return to the manufacturer for the price they paid (minus shipping)

Because they are in administration, they owe a lot of people a lot of money, most likely the manufacturers and suppliers, if they returned the stock they would likely not get a penny back.

or sell on to other stores such as Tescos, Game, Sainsburys....who will likely be lining up to take items off woolies hands as if woolies reduce items too much- where will the shoppers not be shopping? Mr Tesco, Mr Game, Mr Sainsburys....

They probably will for the warehoused high value items, but for the lower priced items and stuff already in store it probably comes down to the time and expense involved in collecting it all up, cataloguing it, relabelling it for a different retailer and then collecting the money. Time and money are two things Woolworths don't have at the moment

It is a shame that a 99 year old trader is retiring- one more year would have made it a century of woolies

You never know, they only have 16 more days to survive before they reach their centenary, they might just make it.

but in so many ways they only have themselves to blame- they refused to change with the times and compete to the extremes other stores do. It is sad but at the end of the day, they are in a commercial world, and they needed to out up a bit more of a fight.

Couldn't agree more, Kingfisher realised it was a sinking ship when they demerged it in 2001, just surprised it has survived this long on it's own. It needed a larger company to take it over and give it direction, similar to comet and superdrug, which Kingfisher offloaded around the same time.
I've given up trying to get my signature to work with the new rules, if nobody knows what the rules are what hope do we have?
  • 25th December is the day that upfront quarterly rent payments become due. Fairly good odds that the administrators wont be wanting to pay them, i'd imagine.

I really do not think they will go to 90%. I think they will insted sell of everything to the highest bidder, be it TK Maxx or Tesco. They will pay more then we as customer will as there will be no overheads.

I was stunned- but not shocked, when I read in earlier posts that some stationary has now been pushed back up in price- they obviously have a game plan of some sorts- trying to get as much from stuff as they can before they sell it all off perhaps?

Ok just been told by my mum who works in the Out Of Town store in Newpor that they have been told to clear the warehouse out ready for tomorrow. We have also heard on the grapevine that tomorrow might be the start of the extra discounts.

Also my store have had meetings all day and they are opening till 8pm so something is going down!

Not a guarentee but def worth a wander into town if you live close :-)
