Woolies - closing down sale tomorrow (11/12/08)

Worth mentioning that they have changed all of the half price normal stationery back to full price at the tills. You get the 30% off, but it is dearer than it was a few weeks ago - I bought two sets of worth it kids paint palette "originally" £2.99 each and a glue originally @ £1.99 flash marked "Half Price" (so £1.49 and £.99p resectively - about what it is worth, and slightly dearer than competition !) Got to the tills and it was £5.57 instead of £3.97 at normal price or £2.79 at sale price (i.e. with the 30% off). The staff were busy trying to rip the flash marking off, although it has had these stickers on all year. This I find a little galling, different if the half price was a promotion that only took place last month, but this stationary has been like this so long some of the flash marking is part of the packaging. I thought when people reduced things in the sale that they had to reduce things that had been at that price for the previous X days - not artificially inflate the price during the sale then taking the 30% off, making it dearer than it almost ever was.
The chap at the tills did mark down the paints but he/I missed the glue. I joked with him that it could hardly be classed as a sale item if it was two quid dearer than 3 weeks ago, and he was fine with reducing them to the half price plus the 30%.
Hope this helps0 -
I cannot get over how cheap and nasty and ignorant some people have been on this thread. It's been a real eyeopener.:(0

Now i have children I am very sad that Woolworths is closing. Yes it does have some low quality stuff but in that shop you can find many good things. .. It is local to me and I can get a whole load of stuff for the children... like costumes, logo underpants, stationary, craft & painting, party stuff, toys, worth-it socks for baby - we also used the shop as a day out and would spend a good hour there looking at the toys then I would buy him a pound toy to take home. I for one will definately miss Woolworths. I got my worth-it freeview and dvd from there too.
I feel that the shop should have branded it self as a shop for chilren's stuff on a low budget as there were selling stuff that families would want ...
Poor form really. I don't ever recall Woolies having been a playcentre...0 -
Woolies product buyers are to blame really, the overpriced junk in recent years, meant that Wilkinsons are now what Woolworths were in the good old days.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

I don't see where the poster who you quoted said that. I know that my own children could easily spend an hour - or two even - in Woolies. It's always been a treat to go into Woolies and browse the toys, games and DVDs. That's what kids like to do :rolleyes:0 -
But surely it is not a day out
I would expect to buy new toys from Woolies, not something that has been pawed over during a family 'trip'.

Misery guts, it's all part of a fun day out for the kids to palm a load of pic n mix before getting the lightsabers all sticky. Rich kids do the same in Hamleys and Harrods. Woolies is where the poorer kids get to test out the latest in toy madness, so chill with the attitude.
Personally though, I'm not feeling too sentimental about the demise of Woolies. It's just a shop. Admittedly it holds some emotional ties as the first place I ever shoplifted, but apart from feeling sorry for the staff you have to remind yourself it's just a money-making enterprise that has failed. All the allusions to it being some sort of icon of Britishness are just BS really.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -
I was sorry to hear that Woolworths were on thier knees, but having visited the store in Peterborough today I will be glad to see the back of it as a brand. It's about time some of these retailers that treat their customers as stupid (but judging by the queues today there are plenty) by elevating prices to allow them to offer huge "discounts". Woolworths have been guilty of this for years as have MFI and we know how that strategy has worked.
I do feel sorry for the staff though who clearly have been let down by the incompetence of the senior management.0 -
I think it's true that certain shops can't get more stock in WHS, the supermarkets etc as they were supplied directly by EUK (the distribution company that was part of Woolworths group.
This wouldn't be linked directly to the Professor Layton game itself, and other stores who don't rely on this distribution chain (such as GAME) will still be getting stock..... albeit not much it seems0
