Would you consider emigrating if the recession gets really bad here in the UK?

How do you know it is not going to happen when my children leave school? And I have no doubt that I will be moving and this is the last time I bother to post on this forum.

    Hi Linni,

Don't leave the thread because of one person. Everyone is entitled to have dreams and aspirations about moving away. Have you thought about when you might move? With me I have a plan, with the aim of being in Northern Spain sometime in 2012. My OH is finished uni next June so we can start paying off the remainder of our debts and saving for land. We have a flat in Scotland but would like to leave it where it is until prices start going up again (whenever they do, won't hold my breath there!). The flat isn't in negative equity yet, but would also like to start overpaying on my mortgage (when debts are paid off).

Goodness me, if a few comments from an anonymous internet forum user upset you so much that you have to (dramatically) announce that you're leaving a forum then one can only reach the conclusion that you should probably shouldn't use internet forums in the first place and that your 'leaving the UK dreams' probably need a little more thought.

This particular board is for debating the economy, house price crashes and the recession. The key work here is debate. A debate is a discussion where one person raises an issue (such as "I want to leave this crap country because Tescos is crowded") and other people offer similar or alternative viewpoints.

Continuing the debate (whether in your absence or not), you state that you have 'no doubt that you will be moving when they leave school'. What happens if your children (who will then be young adults) do not want to leave the UK and follow your dream? Will you force them into it, or will you leave without them?

Out of interest, how did you choose Northern Spain? Do you have family there or are you from there originally?

I'm not from there. I went there about 5 years ago and fell in love with the place (Catalunya). Have been back 1-2 times every year. We are learning the language and when we go there we try to do things like shopping for a meal in the market (conducted in Spanish) to get a feel for what it would be like. We also hope to go there for a month or 2 in 2010 to try and get a feel for the place on a day to day basis.

Sounds good, you know the area and you're learning the language. Have you any employment plans? Do you have a skillset (or your OH) that will fit in nicely in that particular area?

Clearmydebts - we are hoping to visit a friend in Africa next year and we also have our eye on a Camper. We plan to tour Europe (and England) in the summer holidays for the next few years, with the hope of buying a property, funnily enough we are thinking of buying in Spain. If, when the kids leave school, Uni or wherever, they want to come with us, we will rent out the house and if they don't want to come then they can stay at home. Hopefully buy the time hubby retires we will have found somewhere we would like to stay.

Do you speak Spanish or have any cultural or family connection with that country. With your Canada and NZ idea, you had a shared culture and language, which makes it easier to integrate. In Spain, unless you immerce yourself in the country you will be seen as outsiders. I'd imagine it would be quite isolating, especially being away from family and friends. Have you thought this thru?

There is a company that my OH could possibly get a job with in Spain. He could also do contract work, or his old company allowed him to work from home (last summer) so he might be able to work from home over there. I currently work from home, but also have an idea that could work over there (as a small business). We won't move until one of us has a firm job, as I don't want to have to scrimp and save over there. I want to have a good standard of life.

Sounds like a great idea to have a mini-tour of Europe and see if somewhere steals your heart. The holiday will be an adventure for your children as well!
