Would you consider emigrating if the recession gets really bad here in the UK?

  • Hey,

Calm down people and stop being so defensive and harsh. There is nothing wrong with someone dreaming of a life in another country. Dreams and aspirations are what keeps most people going in their day to day life!

I want to live in Northern Spain, have been there many times but haven't 'lived' there yet. I am planning to stay there (renting) before I make a huge move and am learning the language. However, some people just make the jump, including some of my family and friends. It has worked out for them and they are having very successful lives in Oz. For me, I like to be more organised in my approach but I say fair play to anyone if they make a move. Only 2 things can happen:

    1. You don't like the place. In which case you have satisfied your 'need' to live somewhere else. If you don't like it come home, no harm done. You have had a valuable life experience

    2. You love the place and you stay. In this case, well done!

Can I just add, that I am not from the UK but I like it as a country and am happy to stay here for the time being.

I just don't believe in trampling on other people's dreams. Everyone has a different goal in life and if someone wants to live in the sun, let them. It shouldn't be seen as a slur on the UK!!!

Erm, I am quite calm, I fail to see what I put in my posts that makes you think that I'm angry?

If we shy away from providing a note of realism into a discussion then what's the point of a discussion board? If someone came on here saying that they were going to get a 100% 6x salary based mortgage on a mansion because they 'always wanted to live like a lord', should we point out the flaws in the plan, or should we simply encourage them to get on with it (with the text interlaced with  :grouphug: _party_ )?

  • I agree with pointing out negatives in moving away, in fact I would encourage them. I can see the positives and negatives with regards to my plans for moving to Northern Spain.

Unfortunately, your points come across as a bit patronising:

I'll take that as a "no, I have never been to the countries that I am desperate to emigrate to, but I do have some vague idea based on no experience whatsoever that my life would be so much better".

The statement above is not helpful to someone at all. You can't generalise. As I said, some of my friends and family have moved to Oz (and weren't there before) and it worked out for them. Sometimes it is good to take a chance and go for something. It is a good learning curve and brings plenty of life experiences. I had been to Scotland only once and moved there. Lived there for 5 years and had a ball, bought a flat and had a really good job. That was a chance that paid off!

So saying that UK is crap just because there is a queue at Tecos is helpful?

p.s. it was supposed to be patronising.

  • Why would you want to be deliberately patronising to people? My, you have a lovely character

It used to be so much better when we were a sub-board. Now we have a load of DFW huggies in here telling us how to behave in our own board.

It's a disgrace and something should be done about it. I'm writing to my MP, I can assure you.

Soon we'll not be able to discuss house prices falling because the huggies are afraid of us upsetting negative equity home owners.

DD - I have been to lots of countries and basically if I were given the opportunity to go anywhere better than this, I would go!

I forgot to add that my husband has been there and we have friends and family who live there.
  • As I said before, I think a discussion about the positives and negatives is a good thing. Your just choosing not to listen to what I am saying.

I don't think many people would find it helpful to have a patronising person in any thread. You do have some comedy value though.

Have you visited the two countries you mentioned (Canada & NZ), and if so, how many times and over what duration?

    Where is 'better than this'?
