Would you consider emigrating if the recession gets really bad here in the UK?

  • Have you visited the two countries you mentioned (Canada & NZ), and if so, how many times and over what duration?

    Where is 'better than this'?

better can mean different things to different people. whats better for you is not necessarily better for others, each persons circumstances are different, so each persons choices and aspiraions and compromises in life will be different too

um, that's why I asked the question.

I'm a bit confused, why do I ask an individual a question and then have other people chiming in? Are you part fo a group or something?

DD- as post #169 my husband has been to both and has worked abroad many times. I am being an optomist. There are going to be positive and negatives wherever you are, but I would still do it, even if it was a bad experience, I would just come back or move on somewhere else.
  • I am with Dithering Dad here.

linni's sensationalist posts have me somewhat worried and seem like the kind of stuff you would read on the front page of the Mail and the Express or by the likes of Littlejohn.

for a Start, the UK is not overcrowded, it is on a whole empty.
    And scrums at a Tesco's?
as long as you do not go on a friday or Saturday evening, supermarkets tend to be a lot less busy than they were 20 years ago due to larger stores and longer opening hours.
Don't get me wrong, there are loads wrong with this country but the pro's outweigh the cons.
And judging by the numbers of Canadians and New Zealanders here, they both have their problems and are not the paradises-on-earth as made out to be.

I guess if you have no dependants or financial ties then it'd be quite easy to drop everything and 'give it a go'.

For myself, the thought of dragging my children around the world, interrupting their schooling and social development (i.e. taking them away from friends made in this country and any others that I tried and failed to settle in) and the financial cost of buying/selling houses, setting up new homes would prevent me from having such a laissez faire attitude to moving abroad.

Each to their own I guess. Some people put their own needs/desires above their partner's/children's, whereas I don't. Which view is right is upto the individual.

  • From the few pages I have read no one has mentioned moving to South Africa - the only man I envy is the one who hasnt been to Africa as he has much to experience

Trust em if you well off enough to live in Cape Town there are few if any better places to live

I cam from SA (jhb) and I miss the golf courses the weather and the choice of which of the 10 premier league games a weekend I want to watch live (I dont really but its crazy the UK sees 3 games a weekend)

Every country has its plus and minus's and while England has its problems which seem to be manifesting its got a lot less problems than in other parts of the world (SA is perfect apart from the crime and poverty)

Sorry if you feel it is sensationalism but here they knock down bungalows or houses with large plots of land to replace with blocks of flats, or turn bungalows into houses, no matter how many people object, the Local Council don't care. I do go to Tesco during the day but it is still heaving due to the overbuilding in the area. The schools are overcrowded but they will not build any more until every single school place is filled. I am not expecting paradise just somehwere with a bit more space. I could of course just move to Scotland or Wales but that wasn't the question the OP asked..

If I did put my needs/desires above those of my children/partner I would be there now!

If you're not going to go because it's not a viable option for your children/partner, then what's the point of torturing yourself?

Surely you'd be better off making the best of your life here than making yourself miserable thinking about a 'dream life' elsewhere that's not going to happen?

I'd also suggest that you move to a different town/village/district and perhaps shop elsewhere, if Tescos is getting you down.
