Not a very good day here, we had to have Whisky, our beloved Springer Spaniel put to sleep this morning, he was a week off his 14th birthday.
His back end gave way (common issues in Spaniels), told dd this morning that Whisky wouldn't be here when she got home he'd be in doggy heaven, but don't think it sank in.

Were haveing his ashes and going to bury some at the side of the shed, his favourite spot in the garden, and going to sprinkle some when we go to Dawlish on holiday later in the year, he loved it, he was full of the joys of spring.
I went with dad this morning, as we said goodbye, he looked so peaceful, but although on one hand weve been living on borrowed time for last 6 yrs (he broke a bone in his back and it fragmented in his spinal cord - he was temporary paralysed, but got 95% of his mobility back), it doesn't make it any easier. x

Thank you both, shes a bit better this morning, still upset, we all are, but we may have some positive news, after a wack of searching, and calling the rehoming centres, we came across a charity that rehomes Springer Spaniels, we spoke to the lady who rangs it, she told us to what form to fill in and how to apply, we did that sent it off, about an hr later a man rang (he gets the forms), as as weve basically had Spaniels as a family for over 44 years, and non been ill treated etc, hes phoning our vet for a reference, (we're be ok - had the same vet for donkeys years and all dogs were jabbed, taken if poorly etc), but as we came across as ok, hes jumped the procedure and we had a phonecall last night from another lady (getting confusing), her, her husband and their Spaniel do the home checks, (normally application form, week or so later ring vets, then week after that do home visit), under the circumstances theyve pushed us forward, changed their own rules and were haveing a home visit on Sunday, if all ok (shouldn't see a problem), there match us up with a couple of dogs and we then go and meet them and c if they like us, we like them, then they get a new home.

Felt so sorry for them our criteria looked liked a shopping list
    Must be English Springer Spaniel
Liver and White (we had black + white before not as friendly)
Been brought up with children - dd
socialbe - we take the dog on holidays with us, (so hard yesterday had the site were going to Aug andsay we lost Whisky - they love him to bits down there, its almost his second home)
Aged 2 and 5, so their outof puppy training, but not to old that we have to go through all the upset again

They have a beautiful spaniel on their site, all they know hes aged between 9 and 12, and is starting to have back end problems, common in Spaniels, couldn't go through the heartache, espically for dd sake. We've lost dogs before, but Whisky was like a baby, he slept upstairs in mum + dads rm and in he winter months, you'd find a head on the pilllow body in bed and mum + dad hanging on to the end of the matress for grim death.

The cat next door, over the last 2 weeks shes took to haveing her afternoon naps in the outhouse bit, and when nobodys looking coming in and haveing a drink of Whiskys water, he just to sit and look and look her, as to say go on then, course she wondered into the kitchn straight to where the water should of been, looked around in utter disbelief, so we put a bowl of water outside for her, she turned her nose up as it wasnt out of Whiskys bowl, then when we had gone inside she jumped off the laundry basket and drank some as if to say it will have to do. Think haveing her pop around has taken a bit of pressure off, and fingers crossed that we can get a rescue dog, never forget Whisky he was such a big part of our life, but being a dog house its so quiet.
