Planning to move to london??

  • Just a quick question, did you do a sandwich degree? I did an industrial placement at the company I'm now on the graduate scheme of and that can be a great foot in the door. also looks great experience wise.

Funnily enough I did content management in my placement, however am an IT Consultant now.if I were you I'd apply to grad schemes now. It can take months to get through some of their application procedures. Also I would maybe not be too "I'm going to London and nothing else will do". I was exactly the same when I graduated - thought that was where its at. I now live about an hour from London, been on the graduate scheme for 2 years and will be moving there in the summer at the expense of my employer. There are too many variables in your plan I think to know where you will be living exactly. If you get London - fantastic - but in this day and age you have to go where the work is - I left Devon a long time ago when I realised that :p

Good luck and dont forget to start applying now :) Many companies (e.g. mine) do not require specific IT or maths related degrees to get on their grad schemes (mine started at 25k so its not unreasonable to hope for this - though never "expect" it), so no reason both you and your gf shouldnt apply to them. Grad schemes have restricted their entries as I understand in these hard times, but you sound determined and hardworking, if I can do it why shouldnt you :) good luck - wish you both all the best

  • I work for a website in central London - our grads come in at 20-25k. You just need to have a good degree and come across as enthusiastic and interested in an interview - this in itself is a challenge for most I interview but get over that hurdle and you'll be fine.

To echo a post further up. I live in Surrey and was able to buy a nice 3 bed semi and my monthly payments are less than some of the rents suggested. With prices on the slide you'll be able to buy something nice here in a year or so. Obviously don't think about buying until you are sure you want to settle! My train ride is about 25mins and I live in the countryside in a quiet, safe, suburben area. What's more - my trains run through the night. I'll be out in town tonight and will stumble into Victoria and will be home before some of my friends who live nearer and for no extra cost!

I guess my point is that London doesn't have to be stupidly expensive, just don't go looking for a flat in Belgravia. It can be a cheap place to live if you want it to be. I spend £100 on travel a month - compare to running a car! I take advantage of free culture, events, exhibitions etc. There are plenty of markets around selling fresh foods at good prices. If you are spending a fortune then you ain't no MSE!! It doesn't suprise me though - it is very easy to spend if you want to. But it's down to the individual and certainly not the town.

You will find people telling you how expensive London is but if you are smart it doesn't have to be. I know this for a fact because I manage to live and save just fine here on a not too amazing wage!

Out of interest (and I promise that I am not a stalker!) which part of Surrey? Having work near the train station in London is a definite plus.

I live in London, and it took me 45 mins door to door to get to a meeting in the City yesterday, and that included driving to the station as it was raining. If I had walked it would have taken an hour.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I was wondering that! I live in zone three and my costs are £110 a month on travelcards, so I'm interested to know how you can live ni Surrey and commute into London without paying more....

You should cycle, it would be much faster than either.

I do cycle around a bit, but cycling in central London strikes me as too dangerous.

many cyclists in London are a danger to themselves and to others.

i also see many that arrive into the office and don't even shower after cycling to work.
just because they think that they saving the environment it doesn't mean that they can't be hygenic. very strange.

I have plenty of friends and colleagues who cycle into central London.

I also have worked with lots of people who use motorbikes and scooters to get around.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
