I did wonder how the docks could be immune from the slowdown. Surely if its last in first out though you will be safe. Stay off Mse at work and keep your nose clean (whatever that means). And good luck.
Last in, first out is now deemed illegal under the Ageism Laws.
To be last in would imply you're probably younger than the first ones in, therefore it favours the older members of staff.

I know this is naughty, but is Shiplake really "exceptional"? Back in my day it used to be known as Shi*lake....

In OH's day too - he said it was the cream of society; rich and thick. He also reckoned it got significantly worse exam results that the local comprehensive.

I'm not in the final three! I'm 8 weeks. I would still be earning and contributing had I not been made redundant.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope all goes well.

Just done a theoretical check on tax credits of a single person on £30k with 4 children, all in school bar one younger than school age with £100 per week childcare costs and they would still receive £2640 tax credits per year - £220 per month.

I didn't realise it went up so much - we have 2 kids and qualify for the "family" element or whatever they call it, of approx £545 a year. (For which we are still grateful!) Can't get any help with childcare.

Gillotts School got 33.1% A or A* grades at GCSE in 2008. Listed by the Times as being the 18th best state secondary with no 6th form in England.

According to the BBC, Shiplock's results are not as good:

And Shiplock also does worse at A level than the local 6th form college:

Sounds awfully like Mary Poppins. Would she be in her 50's now though?

    Our nanny's in her 40s, not 50s, and doesn't wear uniforms (-:

Very interesting thread, it shows how confused we all are about income levels. It also illustrates how the tax credits systems needs a major review.

I would class myself as a high earner on £47k at the age of 26. I also have free accommodation from my employer worth £7.5k p.a. GF has recently qualified as a teacher and is on £22k, which I would class as medium, and I would say that our combined income is in the high bracket.

    For me low is <£17k
    medium 17k-37k
    high >37k

But how old you are and where you live would impact on these brackets.

£22k is under the national average of £26k so your GF earns an under average wage. True or false?? How can you then therefore say that your GF is a medium income earner? She isn't, as she's an under average earner:confused:

There should be 4 catagories, Low, Average, Medium and High. I would class your GF in the average category and you in the medium category

If an income of £47k is high, what is an income of £100k? Superhigh?? What about the salaries of Doctors and Consultants £150-200k...Super super high?

£47k is 'only' £2800pm, not a great deal and its certainly not enough to lead the high life;) I'm not having a go, i earn similar amounts to you and it is a good wage but i dont see myself as a high earner, even at 25 and living 500miles from the very expensive Capital. A few friends of mine are coming back from offshore work with £80-100k in their hands, that i would class as perhaps high singular earnings.

But its interesting to see peoples different viewpoints on what they class as middle and high.

I don't count average in my reckoning. It's a skewed figure in my opinion.

Funny you should mention doctors etc. I remember in an old Madeleine McCann thread, I described the parents as wealthy. I was shot down in flames by people who only considered 'wealthy' to be millionaires or something.

Then again I remember a conversation more than 10 years ago where a friend and her partner said that if they won £1m that is not enough to retire on. Yet I could live the high life on the interest from that!

Here's my food-lovers guide to which income bracket you are on, based on which kind of food you consider going out for a "treat".

    Low: Fast Food
    Low-Medium: Pubs or Nandos-type food
    Medium: Restaurant - Italian/Japanese/Chinese etc
    High: Quality chef's restaurant
Super-High: Why go out when I have my own chef?

Based on this guide I'm somewhere between Low-Medium and Medium, mainly cos I do love my Nandos every now and then! :D
