At least you have been well warned here;) , I suppose that might have helped you realise the shortcomings in your employers forecasting and plans. Small comfort.
I worked in the same sector as Pickles and it is an amazing career to have if you are an adrenaline junkie for stress and pressure as I am(and I believe pickles is too)
Hence why I cried like a baby when I had to give it up.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

There was casualties in the last recession at the port but not in the actual port company but the various hauliers, shipping lines and forwarders...to hear that there are problems higher up the tree is extremely worrying as that is the main employment in this area...virtually everyone you meet in this town either work for the port or for a company which is in and around the port itself..or if they don't, they have family who does.
I was made redundant twice in the last recession, once from a forwarding agent and once from a shipping line and I remember a couple of big lines go down the tubes plus a fair few forwarders.
This is now getting very very scary.0 -

About income.I hav`nt many years to work and it would be good to carry on in my position. I elected many years ago to be self employed, paying my own expenses so I don`t really cost them anything. Out of the six of us, nationwide, 4 are now self employed and a recent co- worker has had a new contract saying much of his effort can be carried out from home. A bit freaked out regarding investment/ pension statements, but 5 or 6 years is a fair amount of time.
Been thinking tho, it`s been a very varied life.Managed to travel abroad a fair bit on employees money as indeed, stayed in some nice hotels.
Bottom line is we both keep our health, shelter, food and warmth.A few rollies and a beer of an evening.
Done so many holidays that if I never did another I guess it`s not a problem.
For that final security, a bit more coming in than out.0 -

My knowledge of the port and shipping industry is limited to Season 2 of The Wire.
Mine is around 15 years of experience working there plus many years of having my father telling me all about it when I was young.
Now The Wire.....never seen it, am I missing something exciting? If so, might have to see if I can get a copy or two.We made it! Just my opinion, but I think it's the best TV show I have ever. It's a cop drama based on the Baltimore police department set around a drugs investigation / homicide team and the people they investigate. There's five seasons and although they all have mainly the same core characters they all are based around a different area (season 1 was the drug dealers in the projects, season 2 was the ports etc.). It's the script, acting and the arc of the show that is so rewarding though: each episode is fantastic, the main story spans the whole 13 or so episodes of the series. Means you can't just 'dip in' to a single episode mind.
If you want to send me your address on a message Sue I'll send you the first series on DVD (always nice to share something you think is ace with others than have never encountered it before).
When me and the wife watch a few episodes we spend the next talking to each other like Baltimore cops. An insight in to our little life there.0 -
Lucky for you people, I just wrote a hefty tome that you nowno longer will be subjected to as it got cyber zapped.
Upshot is My Mum & Mr P= low, me=medium, my brother=high. The end.0 -
I really should expand...
I earn twice as much now as I did last year. I find the difference between earning 20-30k and 45-55k is quite significant to me. My spending has remained consistent though thanks in part to the fact that Mr. P earns what would be considered by most people to be a low income. We equally share household expenses but outside of that I also try to match my spending to his (i.e. not much) and everything else I save.
What I wrote previously was far more interesting and articulate but thems the breaks. Sorry.0 -

Obviously, I'm aware that the mate who heads an IT department in a merchant bank earns a fair bit more than the mate who is a teacher.
Tho' my really good friend did tell me her new hourly rate on a new role....but only through excitement
She restores prictures and is the worlds 'expert'' on one paticular painter.
Just so happens one of the top ten richest men in the world needed a bit of picture cleaning work done. £100 phr and more hours than she can fit in during a week. She's been at it for 5 years now...but, prior, she only managed to cover costs and childcare for a 40 hr week.
She's enjoying it too. She does academic papers etc which pay very little so swings and roundabouts really.0
