Income brackets: what is prception of low/middle high

  • I would say for a family to have a reasonable standard of living you'd need an overall income of £70k+, probably more in the South East. My income varies from year to year (self-employed) but would fall around 100k after deductions for pension and sickness insurance, but before tax.
I would certainly not describe myself as a 'high earner'. I live in a fairly reasonably priced part of the country and have no mortgage, but even so I can only afford what I would describe as an 'average' lifestyle. We go out to a restaurant a few times a month and probably have two holidays a year (overseas, but not 'luxury' holidays). I buy cheapish clothes (no designer stuff) as do the wife and kids, and we shop at Morrisons, Tesco etc. I cetainly don't feel 'well off'. I think I'd need at least another £50k PA to feel like I'd hit the good life.
  • Last in, first out is now deemed illegal under the Ageism Laws.
To be last in would imply you're probably younger than the first ones in, therefore it favours the older members of staff.

PN I would not want the company to do last in first out anyway.
For our company to more forward we need to get rid of all the dead wood, people who take the mickey out of the generous sick policy, those who incite others to do as little as they can get away with.

That is a fun thing. Be interesting to do a similar one for UK alone, and indeed EU (oh for the skill to create it :(. How accurate is it I wonder?

You've no mortgage and 100k coming in and don't think you're well off? I find that quite incredible to be honest.

I think the crux here is that one person's "reasonable" is another person's "comfortable", which is another person's "wasteful", and so on.

I think we're travelling away from the original topic and making value judgements now though?

the salaries of Doctors and Consultants £150-200k....

Yeah, I wish  Even the greedy GPs only average out at just over £100k, lowly hospital docs like me get less than half that for a 55-hour week
I'd still class myself as a high earner, though - for me under £22k is low income, say 22-45 medium, 45-100 high, 100+ should be eaten

Average is 'middle' by definition, medium is also 'middle' so how can average and medium be 2 different categories?

Moneysaving pharmacists gf earns only 4k less than the mean wage, (and I think 22k is slightly more than both the median and mode wage - so you could accurately say she is earning above the average wage) so I would agree this is a middle/average income.

(also I know a lot of doctors none of whom earn anywhere near 150-200k)

    No, no, no, no, no:D

Average is not middle, i think you need to go and read the definition of the word average, Average is usually the mean otherwise its stated as mode, or median ;)

What is the average of 10+20+20+100+350. The average is 100, not 250.

Bit like salaries, the average annual salary according to the ONS is £26k which means a £22k salary is under average

(There is a massive thread about this £26k figure)

The median salary however is around £22k so it is a middle salary, ie 50% below, 50% above.

But that is not classed as a middle income:rolleyes: You are taking words and twisting them to suit yourself here, how can a middle income be less than that of an average income?

People who state they are on middle incomes are normally in the £40-60k categories not £20-22k categories.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1567887/Average-salary-for-a-GP-leaps-to-andpound110,000.html

Report is a year old now and that states average GP earnings ITRO of £110k, however some are earning up to double this amount.

A cousin of mine is a JD and tells me her salary is ITRO of £45-50k with her 50% suppliment and that her top consultants are on 3x more than her:confused:

You'll be in a better position than me to state what quantifies as an average salary for an NHS doctor working in a hospital environment?

Yes yes yes yes yes :D .
Honestly mitchaa, did you not do statistics at school?

There are three equally valid ways of measuring average.
Mean, median and mode. These are all 'average'.

In the above example the median would be 20, the mode would be 20 only the mean would 100.
