Yes yes yes yes yes :D .
Honestly mitchaa, did you not do statistics at school?

There are three equally valid ways of measuring average.
Mean, median and mode. These are all 'average'.

In the above example the median would be 20, the mode would be 20 only the mean would 100.

As i said in my first post, average is generally defined as mean, if not then it is stated as mode or median.

Average annual salary (Which is mean ;) ) Is £26k pa which means a salary of £22k is under average :D

Like it or lump it, its factual:p

    'under average'?

The fact is that more people earn less than £26k than earn more. This is far more meaningful than twisting round statistics to try to prove that most people are earning more than they are!

I would be absolutely over the moon and consider myself well paid if I got a job paying even 20k a year!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Very true, but these are the figures published by the press and the figures most people work on and take notice of. I agree with you the median is the figure that should be taken notice of as thats the 50% above and 50% below figure.

I believe the average salary of £26k is indeed at around the 60-65th percentile, will have to take a look.

This month I won't even earn enough (including interest on savings) to pay tax on it :)
Hurrah .. hang on ... oops!

I think this counts as low

But that is not classed as a middle income:rolleyes: You are taking words and twisting them to suit yourself here, how can a middle income be less than that of an average income?

Because the average you are using (and incidentally median is very often used as the measurement of 'average' earnings as it is a fairer representation) is skewed by those outliers earning 500k a year plus. The median, which I think is a much fairer average measurement, is often lower than the mean (this holds for income and dress sizes but don't get me started on that)

People who state they are on middle incomes are normally in the £40-60k categories not £20-22k categories.

It's not my fault they are stating things incorrectly then. If they are a middle earner they are earning around the middle wage which is just under 22k. They may want to class themselves as middle earners when they in fact earn twice this amount but that doesn't mean they are middle earners.

Just to add all my friends that class themselves as middle earners have income between 18k and 28k. I know several people earning 40-60k and not one would deny having a high income.

In the debate about earnings.....I presume you are both talking about before any credits/benefits?

As illustrated in a post earlier, the actual INCOME of people on say £22-26 k might be higher changing their spending power significantly, no? Even a single person on that income might be entitled to a discount on council tax.

Different terminologies being used here then as you are relating middle income as it sounds, ie median average, i am using middle income as a point between average and high.

Middle earning singular person to me is between £32k-£75k
    Average £18-£32k
    Low <£18k
    High £75k+

Or thereabouts give or take a little.

Think we'll just agree to disagree on this 1, anything under £26k to me is lower than the national average. (Yes i know its skewed, but so is the median where it takes into account low paid PT workers also)

Single people are entitled to a 25% discount regardless of salary. They would get nothing else whatsoever on a salary of 22k-26k. You will get tax credits if you are on less than about £12k but that's it.

Kind of my point, again, lack of clarity is my fault. Why not raise the tax threshold and make council tax payable over a certain income....simplification.
