Difficult one isn't it? My Dad would pay for absolutely everything if he could. When we go for a meal we simply can't pay, he won't allow it. He came from a childhood on a council estate with no money whatsoever and I think this means he has a very nice attitude with money, which I hope has rubbed off on me. I still maintain that money gives you the most pleasure when you can spend it on others (I'm waiting to be completely shot down for such a namby pamby, cliched statement, but I stand by it!
)
Not namby pamby at all, I feel the same way.P.S. If your Dad wants to treat me to a Maccy D's let me know and I'll message you my address.
Well as all my friends (and my siblings friends too!) have been welcomed into my parents house and get treated just like one of their own with meals cooked for them, drinks made for them and clothes altered for them, then one more to treat won't make a difference! :rotfl:We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

Sue for the first time in 26 years i am no longer confident with job prospects down at the Port plus heard something about one of the big shipping companies as well.0 -
Oh dear not good news.....would you be able to tell me which one? By PM if you would rather.
Hope everything works out ok for you Pickles, my father is going to his (and mine) old company tomorrow to get some gossip...hopefully they are ok (I aim to go back there one day!)We made it! I hope people feel this way increasingly.
Money, in its paper/coin form is only a means to an end, not the end itself: how we live is.
I think th global scale is fascinating. But I think its clear that while we need to put in that prspective we are struggling enough with the UK in this thread ATM!
DH and I don't live together on weekdays, so we maintain a habit I have always had of totting up the blessings at the end of the day in a phonecall. We've been able to make almost the sadest news better by looking at the good news or our comparitive security.
I have to say though, I'll be very much more comfortable when we are in our own place.
Sue, re your father and McD's, I think it probably gives him as much pleasure as it dos your kids. How wonderful to know you are all so loved.:)0 -

I did wonder how the docks could be immune from the slowdown. Surely if its last in first out though you will be safe. Stay off Mse at work and keep your nose clean (whatever that means). And good luck.
Cheers mewbie.
The problem is in the past we have not been touched by two recessions so have been to confident and proud of the company.
I love going into work as it has been my life sometimes working 7 days a week for months on an end.
I started questioning at meeting several weeks ago and started realising that they have also not realised how global this problem is and that there is no end in sight.0 -

OUCH. I'm sorry, I hope you survive. Its wonderful to feel that way about a job and an employer, its so sad more employers don't inspire this. Most people spend so much time at work, ther is no rule to say we shouldn't enjoy it and care passionately about it.
At least you have been well warned here;) , I suppose that might have helped you realise the shortcomings in your employers forecasting and plans. Small comfort.0 -

Sounds awfully like Mary Poppins. Would she be in her 50's now though?
my own salary, or rather my spending power is limited to the number of magic beans presented to me on a weekly basis.Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -
There was casualties in the last recession at the port but not in the actual port company but the various hauliers, shipping lines and forwarders...to hear that there are problems higher up the tree is extremely worrying as that is the main employment in this area...virtually everyone you meet in this town either work for the port or for a company which is in and around the port itself..or if they don't, they have family who does.
I was made redundant twice in the last recession, once from a forwarding agent and once from a shipping line and I remember a couple of big lines go down the tubes plus a fair few forwarders.
This is now getting very very scary. We made it!
