Thats not true. they do work with a normal tank & cylinder system. You may find you want to install a pump to improve the pressure though

AFAIK they are only meant work with combo boilers and mains pressure hot water cylinders. ( like what the rest of the world uses, but not little old UK  )
If you have a tank in the loft then these will only work if the cold supply to the tap/shower is taken from that tank too. ( ie so pressures of hot and cold are equal).
IF not then what happens is, when you mix hot and cold, you only get cold, as the high pressure cold pushes the low pressure hot water back into the hot water cylinder the wrong way.
Most parts of UK have cold taps fed straight from the mains

    Since when?

Mains supply tends to go to the kitchen sink only. In the umpteen places I have lived in the bathroom cold water supply comes from the cold water tank in the attic. This is done because it's that much closer.

Certainly not up north, in all eight houses I have lived in all cold water taps have been fed from the mains, ie all potable water.

I wouldn't clean my teeth in stale water from a storage tank in the loft.
Maybe bye-laws were different daan sarf or in the colonies. Or are the plumbers just cheapjacks?;)

All cold taps in every house I've owned (several) have been connected to the mains supply.

And what about the cistern on the loo in the bathroom ?

And how does the cold water actually get into this tank ???

I'm north-ish and all my upstairs cold taps are fed from a cistern. The simplest way to tell is to turn the main stopcock off and see what happens. My downstairs taps empty almost straight away but the upstairs cold taps are unaffected.

I must admit, I've wondered about cleaning my teeth in it, especially when little black bits start coming out the tap.
  • By a 1inch pipe to the loft, but I've never seen the bathroom cold feed supplied off this.

If other people have mains to their bathroom then good luck to them, as they will have problem, I personally have not come across this setup
